Afghanistan

The choice is yours.  If blood and guts are too much, the video at the end of this dispatch is not for you.  Do not click the button if your stomach is too weak for war.

2011-09-18-051425cc1000

Watch your step.  Underneath that ground is the end of your legs, your testicles, and your life.  If you are not ready to be shot in the face or blown to smoking pieces, better to find another line of work.

2011-09-18-013117cc1000

The bomb dogs provide a sense of confidence, as do the various gadgets.  In reality, the dogs regularly walk past bombs, as do the men holding the detectors.  Whatever the case, one step off the “cleared” path is completely uncleared.  There is no white and black.  Everything is grey and black.   Even the pressure plates often don’t work until the umpteenth guy steps on it and then WHAM!  His parts fly into trees.

2011-09-18-050550-2cc1000

I tried to find the Soldier who shot the following video.  No success.  The person wearing this camera was on official business for the US Government, and therefore this video is free of copyright constraints.

Final warning: Do not view if you can’t stomach unwatered footage.

Most likely, this wounded ANA soldier was evacuated to the US along with his family, and will be a permanent resident when he recovers.

Ok seriously, if you guys think these guys did a good job then you have obviously never seen a good medic in action. Yea time from injury to bird was great but actual treatment was crap. They Never at any point secure an Airway on this guy, they sit there for a good couple of minutes just staring at this guy debating on doing a Cric on this guy, the whole time you could aspirating on blood, teeth, bone. Seriously with one guy handling massive bleeding, you should had that Cric done by the 7 min mark on that video. You guys should be reclassed to Truck Drivers, you are a disgrace to the Medic name.

      Rob,
Ok they could have done some things better but theres nothing worse than an armchair critic. Consider all the stressors from being OTW, and being so close the blast themselves.

These guys may be junior medics so their skillset and knowledge may be limited too.

On the positive side they controlled major haemorrhaging first, exposed the body to check for more wounds and got the '9 liner' out quick.
On the negative side they were too slow with IV/IO access and left the cas exposed for too long (heat loss).
As for the surgical cric, could have gone either way... but i agree that they needed to make a 'D', either 'bang it in' or get the cas to lean forward and maintain the airway himself (which eventually happend). TBH id have 'banged it in'.
As long as they learn from their mistakes there on the way to becoming a good medic.

If they were 18D or equivalent then you'd expect better.

My thanks to the medic for providing this footage so that others may learn. Good job boys and keep up the good work. Never stop learning.

I didn't get the chance to read all of the comments made, but you sir...ok, they could've done a better job, but you can't tell me they didn't do everything in their power to keep the soldier alive and evac'd. He was breathing "normally" (as normal as can be) so they focussed on other things.

Even with medical training, things like this usually don't happen and if it happens, it's up to the guys that are there to get it done. So instead of flaming on how bad they did, how about you praise these guys for being there for the guy!!!

I am looking to get in contact with the soldiers who rendered aid in the video. Any help would be appreciated, its for a good cause, for them and for the military. Any help would be great. Have last names but without first names its hard to look them up on AKO/DKO mail.

NAT GEO is doing stories from the soldiers on these types of events and wants the soldiers to tell the story not some narrators. I am a researcher for them. So if you now of any of the guys in the video, let me know or have them contact me at rdID8487@gmail.com.

Thanks, very respectfully from a fellow vet..

Appalling and tragic and heroic and inspiring.

Truly awed by the focus, training skill and courage displayed. Blown quite literally to pieces, that young man's forititude is almost beyond comprehension to me. Even with his body ruined, he did not cry out, and even did what he could to help the medics helping him. I truly hope he survived and has found a way to prosper.

Equally impressive was Tsgt Metz's reaction - Literally blown onto his ass, his first coherent act was to promptly render skilled life-saving aid.

How ever much we say we appreciate these remarkable young men, we don't appreciate them enough.

I know this was an older video, I thought I had to watch it again. What was the post hospitalization outcome and do you have any idea where this guy (the wounded one) is now?

Great job men, with what you had to work with. A very sobering video Michael, thank you. The sad note is that these men will see, feel and smell this experience for the rest of their lives. And this is just one. Think about what these men and women will experience over the stent of their tour in war. And you will realize how hard it is for them, when they return to civilization... May God Bless you all.

I watched the first 21 minutes of this video in my EMT class, I was fine until 7 minute in and realized the patient was trying to position himself to breath. We had a flight medic who told our class the first time he saw the vid he left the room crying because all he could focus on was the airway.

In 20 minutes, I had the the lessons on airway's, amputations, tourniquets, positioning hammered home in a way class instruction can't. I also learned that maybe someone should have run an assessment on the guy trying to cut off the clothes.

My son goes off to basic in September, but he will spend the bulk of the summer at the fire hall learning as much about trauma injuries as he can.

I have GREAT respect for the things the military is exposed to and I will also equip my son with techniques for dealing with stress and trauma not just physically as well

This was a hard video to watch, but I believe the lessons are invaluable to my future as a first responder, thanks for sharing.

Hello would you mind stating which blog platform you're working with?
I'm looking to start my own blog soon but I'm having a hard time selecting
    between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.
The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I'm looking for something completely unique.
P.S My apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask!

Hey there! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering which
blog platform are you using for this website?
I'm getting sick and tired of Wordpress because
I've had problems with hackers and I'm looking
at alternatives for another platform. I would be awesome if you could point me in the direction of a good
    platform.
