Afghanistan

The choice is yours.  If blood and guts are too much, the video at the end of this dispatch is not for you.  Do not click the button if your stomach is too weak for war.

2011-09-18-051425cc1000

Watch your step.  Underneath that ground is the end of your legs, your testicles, and your life.  If you are not ready to be shot in the face or blown to smoking pieces, better to find another line of work.

2011-09-18-013117cc1000

The bomb dogs provide a sense of confidence, as do the various gadgets.  In reality, the dogs regularly walk past bombs, as do the men holding the detectors.  Whatever the case, one step off the “cleared” path is completely uncleared.  There is no white and black.  Everything is grey and black.   Even the pressure plates often don’t work until the umpteenth guy steps on it and then WHAM!  His parts fly into trees.

2011-09-18-050550-2cc1000

I tried to find the Soldier who shot the following video.  No success.  The person wearing this camera was on official business for the US Government, and therefore this video is free of copyright constraints.

Final warning: Do not view if you can’t stomach unwatered footage.

I am immensely grateful that we have young men and women laying down their lives for our freedom. sadness is the media and our politicians won't tell the truth about Sharia Law and Islam and the threat it is to our freedom and liberty.
Those Israelis may well be correct in that the USA should have gone in an maak schoon and then left.
Truth is Saudi Arabia and Pakistan amongst the Organisation of Islamic Nations at the UN are enemies of freedom and liberty.

Keep on preaching to the choir, folks, if it makes you feel better to be centurions to the empire. . .Efficiency, eh? I see a young man mangled for something called "the great game." Whose game is it? Some efficiency. . .

Come back whole, which would mean sooner than later.

I fully agree. Don't mind the zombies thumping their chests, voting you down and yelling 'Marine Corps.' They get paid every two weeks, retired or not - nothing like it anywhere. People that work at productive jobs, that make stuff and actually help people are forced pay them. Someday, hopefully, this will end too when the fake dollar collapses.

Art: What kind of god would let any of this happen? It's the belief in gods conflicting against another group's belief in gods that leads these people to put bombs in the ground hoping to maim or kill those who believe "wrong".

Noname: The God I serve is the Creator of all who likewise proposes His offer [of salvation] to all. As such all men are given the latitude to freely choose to respond to him favorably (accepting His offer of grace) or unfavorably, rejecting him outright (see Acts 17:24- 1). As such, it is our free wills that get us into these travesties and abysmal horrors. Think about it, were He to "force" the unwilling to love him would be a greater offense to most (ask any atheist). In turn then, consequences unfortunately follow the choices of all men who would have things their individual and inumerable ways, instead of His ... which is that we all love our neighbors as ourselves - even as He loved us - laying down our lives for one another, as He did His for us (see John 15:12).

Noname: ... cont'd ... The trouble begins though when one is initially burdened at the onset though with deciding who in the h_ll one has to accept as one's fr_king neighbor .. the guy of a different color who would 'love' me as himself, or the guy who might look very much like myself but who would secretly strap explosives to even his handicapped 'sister' to make a statement in honor of a 'god' who's image he pathetically bears in kind.

The god that the enemy believes in isn't a god he is a false god and his teachings are contrary to a civilized society. These people are a disease and must be defeated at all costs.

God bless the American supplied medics and helo, for that unfortunate chap with the splintered bones and dangling shreds of flesh for limbs and complete facial and dental removal was an Afghan hired as an interpreter or point man to wade into danger, protecting U.S. troops.

This man should have died. What possible life will he and his family have with no face, no teeth, no limbs, no bladder and, without a doubt, a mind turned to mush. Thank you Bush. Thank you Barry, I'm so proud to be an American. At least I know I'm free...

And what, exactly, are American soldiers doing over there? Don't give me any line about 'following the golfer-in-charge's orders or protecting my freedom from fake terrorists. Apologies, if I stepped on your forevermore veteran benefits, generous pension, unquestionable patriotic media image and all that.

Yes, the U.S. Army hires local dimwits motivated by mouths to feed to wade ahead and take an IED (as this poor soul did) and clear the path for loudmouth Americans with itchy triggers. GTFO out of Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen and 692 places I can't recall at the moment. God I hope people wake the F up and this ends before I have to witness another life-changing video like this. It has been 2 days and my heart wrenches when I even think about this video. I'd wager less than 2,000 Americans have watched this, or will take a few minutes away from Xbox, NFL and porn to ponder the situation. But remember, support out troops!!!
  • This commment is unpublished.
Stone Wall In Irelan · 9 years ago
Pointless war(s) perpetuated by globalists and war profiteers. We need to GTFO of all these distant countries and let them sort themselves out. We can't afford it and it does nothing but cause a backlash of violence as the promised money and rebuilding commitment evaporates.

Support our troops no matter what and never question their actions inflicted upon the locals. That is the message perpetrated by media and panting veterans ready to pounce on any criticism like a loyal dog. And it works too - just look at all the lemmings putting Chinese-made yellow ribbon stickers all over their vehicles and who don't seek out video and accounts such as here to see the truth. Hoo-rah. Go team. What a joke. These soldiers and mercinaries need to wake up and take care of business at home, which will probably be to violate and suppress the increasingly restless American citizenry.

    Thanks for the disturbing video.

A very unfortunate incident for the casualty. However, you might want to reconsider and use the video for things NOT to do! As a "medic and instructor" you should have identified the casualty care as being some of the poorest rendered.

And I for one think they did a bang up job on keeping this man alive. Hat off to those brave medics in the middle of nowhere saving someone's life who has major major trauma with just a few things in their back packs and their knowledge. This is not like an EMT who has an ambulance full of gadgets and a full service hospital within 5 miles of them. Some times people just like to over critic others when they are doing hero type work... kind of sad, but ahh who cares. i'd let those medics save my life any day.

Take your training and so called knowledge elsewhere if you think that this was just horrible care. This is not Ft Sam anymore, this is real life. I do admit from my side of this "screen" I noticed some things the medic did wrong. Have you been in this medic's shoes? Not in the ER or battlefield simulation! I can honestly say, that no matter how much you have trained and how prepared you think you are... you are never prepared for an incident like this. When the bullets are overhead, when rockets are going across your face, when there is an explosion that rocks your world and injures a friendly, your mind just does not work right. *Very difficult* What he needed was for someone to get him to calm down and focus. That would've helped him. He knew what to do but didn't know when or where to use his knowledge. After the hell is over that's when it'll get rough for him. HOOAH! ~Deuce Four~

You took the words right out of my mouth.

As a medical NCO myself, I am appalled that no one established an airway immediately then worked on the limbs. He also should have been immobilized, strapped and drugged within a few minutes of applying the tourniquets. I see they had the intentions of putting a line in, but did they? I wouldn't really matter anyways because he was strapped above the attempted site. I know this medic is under a lot of stress, but the CLS guys know basic lifesaving techniques. It's ingrained in their brains from basic.

I am in shock at this video. I've never seen such poor medical care.

Wow, as a medical NCO myself and an instructor of combat advisors, I realize that massize uncontrolled hemorrhage is the leading cause of preventable death on todays battlefield. This casualty will die from loss of blood faster than he will from an injury to the maxilofacial area. He was obviously breathing just fine through his nostrils. It's a principle now known as MARCH - look it up.. I suggest you get out of the hospital and brush up on your combat skills before criticizing others.

Cowgirl, seriously ? You are a medic ?....

So you would have established an airway before you dealt with limbs ? While you are trying to tube him how did you plan on putting the blood back in afterwards ? Leave your stateside knowledge right there, stateside. And also, before any of that he should have been dragged to a cleared area, certainly not with TCCC going in in an unclear choke point.

          Respectfully said.

Hi, thanks for the video, I will use it as training video and I am sure it will help a lot. Even though most of my men won't understand the language very well.

For everyone else, you can download the video by looking up in the source code, sometimes it works but most times it doesn't work (especially on youtube). Here I had luck and hopefully the admin does not remove the following link:

We all say thank you for your service, but do we really mean it? I can tell you it very much changes when your very own son joins the Army as mine has. This was a very sobering piece of film. I have been deeply touched my Michael Yons work. He is a very brave man. Don't forget to thank them - they do appreciate it. Tears.

Poor ANA grunt gets his half his face and leg blown off and all you want to b***h about is "DURR THEY WANT THE OIL" or "LONG LIVE THE TALIBAN HURR".

    News flash;

This is an Afghani soldier. Injured by Afghani insurgents. You must be straight up retarded to want to make comments on the US involvement in Afghanistan or promote the Taliban on this page.

Go back to your college dorms, you over-excited law students. You all think it's cool to feel like you're standing up for something by protesting and arguing US involvement overseas, or think you're cool for thinking you're promoting a righteous and free group (Taliban).

JohnG, who the hell told you all college students are pothead hippie losers, who like to protest against pretty much everything?
And in what capacity are law students related to this? What are they guilty of? Rules of Engagement? Even a seasoned grunt will tell you that indiscriminate shooting leads to total failure in COIN operations.
With so many hypocrites and losers to rant against, from the President to incompetent miitary leaders, without forgetting the corrupt Capitol Hill crowd, you had to choose college/law students.
That being said, you're nothing but a jealous troll, a probable coward and armchair general who despises all those that use their heads properly. Law school was your goal, but you had to settle for intellectual misery.

Let me pop the news to you, JohnG: this ain't the sixties and not everyone that protests is a flea-ridden hippie or a "pinko". If you enjoy being a wage slave and living in ignorance, it's your call, mate.
Truth be told: since the demise of the Soviet Union, the United States have not been seriously threatened in their territorial integrity and national security altogether. The Marines at Iwo Jima and the 101st in Bastogne (and the Brits in El Alamein, for that matter) saved the freedom-loving world; taking Baghdad, Grenada or Panama did not, jackass.
It's not just me who says this, check out people who are a lot more intelligent than me or you, such as Andrew J. Bacevich or William J. Astore. Since we're at Michael Yon's joint, do check out what Gen. McChrystal has to say about National Service on Newsweek magazine.

God Bless the USA, from an expat.

Guess what? These men in ACU's wearing our country's flag give you the right to complain about them.

And remember 9/11. Would you be talking so much crap about US troops if you were there? If you witnessed a friend get crushed by the collapsing towers? I don't care if you think there was a conspiracy involved. Innocent Americans died.

    Politics trolls, G.T.F.O.

    That is all.

But what does Iraq has to do with 9/11?
That's like saying two American terrorists blow up something in UAE, then UAE spends next 8 years invading Canada because they live in same region.

What is this war good for? :-) Talking about 9/11, somehow I have to think about Nagasaki and Hiroshima... something doesn't feel right if you say innocent dide on purpose so they have to die, too... if that's true, what should Japan do with the U.S.A. ?

I bet these armchair medics would be crapping their pants in a situation like this. The guy fought them all the way, and while in a war zone they prepped him for medivac and hospital care with a backpack full of band aids. Dont forget the FACT that this area had been swept, and deemed OK to be in. Now this happens, and that little gem has to be going through their minds while they are saving his life. You dirtbags that gave your little critiques need to STFU.

Actually the spot the ANA step into wasn't swept by the EOD Sargeant. You says it in the video when one guy walks too close to the spot where the ANA got blown up.

Mines. I would be in constant fear of mines if I were there fighting.

As a mom of a soldier in Afghanistan, I felt that I needed to make myself watch this video. I needed to know how things really are. Not how hollywood or the news portrays them. Or how my son laughs them off. I need to know because my son will come home and I need to be able to understand what he saw and experienced. My son is stationed near where Michael is so I know that a lot of what Michael writes about is what he is experiencing. As the man doing the minesweeps, how would he feel if it was one of his team members. Thank you Michael for giving me a little insite.

As a Marine Officer who has had this guy with us I want you all to know he is a total ass clown and can guarantee this comment will be deleted proto. He is the 99% of reporters embedded with the military, there to sell a story. No one wants to buy a book that says "Yup, just as you've been told by those who serve". No, this guy has to tell some untold scoop. Give me a break.

I don't get it, this is the only guy I've seen as a consistant imbed. Without Yon's dispatchs the wars are just a buzz in the background of a distracted country. If you've got a better way of showing whats the front is about lets have it...

Dear Sir....AS MOST officers respect those troops that they send into battle....why are you jerking Yon's chain....his writing since 2005 has either corrected issues for those troops...or nailed people like you for their disregard of those warriors//////His calls to us at home to right the AIREVAC horrible response time is a example of why he is so highly regarded.

What have you done to improve any aspect of your Marine warriors safety? WOULD YOU TOSS YOUR CAREER and call BS to a higher up? Yon, tried to jump in a fire fight to save a downed officers life, maybe he should just let you lie there with a black mag and do nothing...HE PICKED UP A M4 And risked his life and his only job.

Mike was with my unit in Mosul, Iraq. I remember the day my Bn CDR was shot during a foot chase. This is the day that Jack is talking about. His job involves a camera and computer, and when you can drop all of that to assist in an attack on our brothers in arms, he will definitely be a soldier in my book. HOOAH! ~Deuce Four~

    And another thing! Unless
You've been in combat you have no idea what you are talking about, have no right to
even comment on what you " think" you are perceiving and processing. It's a whole different world when you are there, breathing one breathe to the next, making decisions on reflex and reacting on instinct. Instinct, meaning, no time to think about different out cones based on our reactions, just reacting. Deb, please don't think he is giving you any insight at all.

all -- i work for a large avionics group (heavy gov't contract) in development. been wondering for sometime if there is a way to build a lightweight solution for these bombs (i.e. personal force field kit powered by a watch bettery). but saw this today & wondered if this BOT (55 pounds) would be heavy enough to trip these bomb pressure plates ? http://www.rotundus.se/ . i am imagining a bunch of these deployed & constantly roaming in a site like in the video above. best, GBG

The only reason that this Afgan was cared for was the actions of the non-medical personal. The Medic despite all of his training was unable to make a life altering decision, to cric or not to? I understand that I am not in the same frame of mind as him but having been in this situation. I could list a long list of what they did wrong but in the end he was alive to get on the MEDEVAC. This video is a good training tool for this group of Soldiers and the rest of us involved in combat medicine so that we can respond in a rapid fashion despite the austure environment. BTW this is not a US Soldier injured as others have stated we do not wear jogging suits on missions. As a few others tried to comment they should have treated for hypothermia which would aid in clotting and preventing death. Also the main Soldier helping is a SFC an E-7 in the Army please do not utilize tother branch rank. Basically ensure you know what you are talking about before talking.

Why would you cric a casualty that is still conscious and breathing through his nose? A cric is not always indicated on a casualty with severe facial wounds. I think he made the right call, I would have waited for the casualty to fully lose consciousness before giving him another wound from which to bleed from.

Unfortunately I have been in the medic's shoes too many times. I have 14 yrs of service time and have had 14 yrs of extensive training for situations such as these. I say great job to the medic and SFC that were there to initiate life saving care. HOOAH!! ~Deuce Four~
