Great Photography in your book.
Just got the Moment of Truth book. Thank you for putting in such high quality photographs. I've seen them on your website, but the resolution is so much better in the book. this makes the images even more powerful. Looking forward to reading the words.

The book
I just got mine 2 days ago have only got to the first couple of chapters but man can't wait till i get time to read it all the way threw.I leave on R&R in 2 weeks so a 17 hour flight across the pond should be just the thing to settle in and read a good book. Thank you for writing it Michael i am sure it will be great and i plan on getting many more as gifts for all my friends that want the truth about what is going on over here i can't think of any better way t let them know then from the man that lives it in a bigger way than i do. Even though i have been here non stop since it all began and will try to endure till the end you get to see allot more of the things that go on out side the camp that i am restricted to now that i have given up the road and staying in side. Keep it up and hurry back if you get a chance.

great book
This is the best book I have read on Iraq .I have told everyone I can contact to buy it and read it.Thanks for giving me some insight into what is going on and what the men and women of the U.S. armed forces are doing and what they are up against.

what a great service to the USA and the troops
Mr Yon puts his finger on the real reason we can win or lose this war, When our soldiers and the people of the US are steadfast for our ideals - freedom, justice and the rule of law people are drawn to us and we win. When we sink to the level of the beheaders who seek to terrorize the innocent and the deceivers who sell out anyone they can for momentary gain we drive people away and we lose. Our soldiers Faith in each other and the mission should be a lesson to us at home that this country was founded on faith in democracy and the sacrifices of the few have made possible the impossible. A free people in a free land. Way to go, we need this dose of reality about who we are and what we can do when we learn our lessons thanks Harry Case

Everything I Expected and More
The best read, bar none that I have experienced on the situation in Iraq. I expected nothing less as every dispatch or news item on this site has been jam packed with the "truth." Thanks, Mr. Yon for your support of the members of the US military and for your personal sacrifices which led to this informational read.

Great Book!! Thanks Michael.
I was a member of Deuce Four during our tour in Iraq. C Co, 3rd PLT. I want to thank you Michael, for bringing to the public our efforts over there. This book is the most realistic and informative read on what is really going on in Iraq. Thank You

The Book
This book is a no B.S. history of the war in Iraq. Michael pulls no punches and the only side he is on is the side of our soldiers. He shows how we are snatching victory from the jaws of defeat if the politicians will just let us complete the job. This is an excellent book and you will learn a lot from reading it. I have just ordered two copies to give to my public library.
Jeanette Lucey , April 14, 2008
got it!!!!
Got my copy last week! I'm 2 chapters in, and was glad to see the Gates of Fire photos in the book. Also, I sent a Purchase request to the Univ. of Texas. Any one can do it, at http://www.lib.utexas.edu/services/request/ but it probably holds more weight if a student, faculty member or alumni requests it. Thanks Michael! You've got some fans in Austin, TX! Godspeed to you! -George S.

Thank you Michael!!!!!
I just finished the book and can't say enough how grateful I am to hear what is really going on and how proud I am of our men and women over there. To know the people want us there and that they are fighting side by side with our armed forces makes me know without a doubt that we are doing the right thing!!! I will do everything in my power to let my political representatives and the President know that I feel we should send more troops and finish this! I am also spreading the word about your book. Thank you again...and may God bless you and all the men and women in the military and their families. Trisha

Awesome Read!
Thank you for the book and the truth, Mr. Yon! To quote George Orwell: In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.

You're the Ernie Pyle of your generation
I've been reading your dispatches since 2005. I read Moment Of Truth In Iraq over the weekend and it brings everything together in a clear and understandable fashion. God Bless you for taking this on and doing such a terrific job. Stay safe.

Fantastic
Michael, Thank you so much for writing what I think is the most important book about the current status of the Iraq war. I just wish our political leadership on both sides would read this book and take to heart the incredible sacrifices of our brave men and women in uniform. Let us hope that we stay the course and continue to win the struggle for justice and freedom throughout the world. I hope that if we win in Iraq, the positive ripple effects will profoundly and positively influence the world for generations to come. Semper fi

Moments of Truth
Finished your book in nearly one sitting - lots of bang for the bucks! As a Vietnam veteran and Ruff Puff operations I am impressed with your focus on counterinsurgency. It does work because it focus is on doing the right thing and most people will do the right thing! Your work should turn America around about how the war is being won - in spite of the mass media agenda. Thank you for an excellent read and your committment to every soldier who has given there blood and treasure so Iraq can be free. Prior to the surge I was convinced that Iraqi vets would have to build there own Memorial Wall like we did but now I am thinking differently.

Excellent Book!
Got it yesterday, finished it tonight. Fantastic Read. Thank you for writing this. If only the Presidential candidates would read it! Since it won't help them get elected they won't, but it would be nice.

Moment of Truth in Iraq
Mike, I'm sure you don't remember me. I was one of the original supporters on your website. You and I traded a couple emails. My doctor was a surgeon assigned to Iraq. He was also an F-16 pilot and flew missions, fixed wounded. What a story. In any event, I wanted to say I've supported you the whole way. I have watched the ups and the downs. The Punishers Ball with Bruce Willis. Man, you brought it all home, and I mean home. The book came to my house yesterday. Reading it over the weekend. Thanks man, you know not how much you impact. hoorah

Required reading
Michael, your book should be required reading for every Senator, Congressman, and every high schooler in the country. The first question asked in any political campaign should be, "have you read Michael Yon?'. On another note; the name Col. Yon is remember very fondly by so many Florida Gator enthusiasts. I read once, but forget now, what your relationship was with him.

Silly Book . . . . .
. . . flying in the face of the armchair pundits and spin-doctors who sit here, thousands of miles away, playing the intellectual game of judgment. You've conveyed excellent and powerful insight Michael. I've passed your important work on to many. I will continue to support your 'silly' audacity of telling the truth and changing minds about the reality 'over there'. Thank you.

Encouragement in a handy package.
For the longest time I had my doubts about the war from being blasted by all the negativity around me, but this book, and your website, revealed the light of truth. Encouragement in a handy package is what this book is. It tells the truth, painful though it may be, a medicine this sick nation dearly needs. I hope the words from this are spread across this unbelieving and doubtful nation, so that our people can once again take faith in our troops and our mission over there.

Michael Moore is uding your photo!
If you go to MichaelMoore.com right now, he is using your famous photo in a header entitled "Georges War." I can't find an email address to contact Michael Yon, but I know he couldn't have given that guy permission. I grabbed a screenshot but it won't copy to the comments box.

Moment of Truth
Michael; I received your book friday and have not been able to putit down, what a wonderful, thought provokling book. I have long supported our brave men and women but never really could get what I considered the Truth of what was going on in Iraq. You have answered those lasting questions with heartfelt honesty. I felt as though I was there as I read many of the stories of battle. I have read your dispatches for some time and you are to be commended for your honesty and bravery. May the Lord be with you and keep you safe along with all our troops wherever thaey may be deployed.

Sunlight cutting through the haze of war
I blew through your book the day I recieved it. I expected great writing and you delivered in every way. What I didn't expect were the clear insights you shared about the core, principled reasons for our recent successes. As you make very clear, we still have miles to go... God bless General David Petraeus and our fighting men and women! Your book doesn't gloss over weaknesses and major screw-ups but still succeeds in shedding needed light on the most lethal, disciplined and principled fighting force in history.

Should be politicians required reading
Michael, You have added an invaluable resource for people to find out what is REALLY going on on the ground vs. what the "mainstream" media is saying. I hope that this book is distributed far and wide to the population, not just in the US but across the world to see just what kind of people our country has defending them! They and you show what the true spirit of America is. Keep up the good work and God Speed!

Moment of Truth in Iraq
As of April 24th, Barnes and Noble's warehouses are sold out . Moment of Truth in Iraq is number 14 on B&N's best seller list--which the clerk said is huge. They have tons of requests for back-orders. Let's keep up the demand--spread the word--the politicians can lie about the war, but the folks are demanding the real deal. Thanks, Mike.

Michael, Your book is fantastic! I got it a couple weeks ago while out of the country but spent most of this weekend reading it. Whether you're "for" the war or "against" it, I think this is must reading for everyone- what you've described has made me extremely proud of our soldiers over there. They really do seem like the best of the best. Thank you so much for going over to Iraq and sharing your observations and insights with us!

Fantastic read
I got a copy of your book from Barnes and Noble online about a week ago. Fantastic work and a compelling read. I'm glad to read about successes that we are having in winning hearts and minds of the Iraqi people after a rocky start. My only complaint was that it wasn't about 200 pages longer! Great work Mr Yon. Please keep it up!

Great Read!
Just received Moment of Truth in Iraq... Read the first 5 chapters and love it so far. Thank you for putting your own life in danger to bring us the real story. The stories of the individual soldiers and Marines are very inspiring. I was also very surprised when I read about Spc. Michael Grimm, who was from my hometown of Wisconsin Rapids, WI. Considering our town is about 20,000 people, you can imagine my surprise when I read that portion of the book. Keep up the great reporting!

Outstanding read
Every American, especially the politicians, needs to read this book. Michael, thank you for your work and for putting together such important information in Moment of Truth in Iraq. I've told everyone I know to purchase and read it. Well done! Continue to stay safe in your travels...

Reinstilling Belief
I ordered two copies of your book--one to read, the other for my collection. My husband is a Marine who has been to Iraq three times and will be going again early 2009. I have gotten very frustrated (as many families have) with the separations, loneliness, and anxiety. Your book has helped reinstill a belief that what the American military is doing over in Iraq is making a difference. It will be slow going, but with leaders like Petraeus at the helm I believe it can be done. Thank you SO much for chaning your mind and doing this. And I LOVE the opening chapter--that is one of my favorite songs from Mass. It was sung at two memorial services for Marines out in 29 Palms and has a very special meaning to me.

Moment of Truth in Iraq Book
I purchased two (2) of these books, one for my son who is Navy Spec Ops and one for myself. Michaels honest assessment of what is happening has been relayed to me over and over again by my son and my nephew (FAST Co. Marine) and it is refreshing to read more positive news about our military (and political) progress in this effort. The people on the ground do believe in this mission and their accomplishments...thanks for your effort and your support of those people who are there to do what is right. Awesome book and great writing... THIS is what we should be reading about our military, versus the garbage that we see/hear from politicians and pundits.

Moment of Truth in Iraq
WOW!!!!!!!! You nail it on the head with every word. Your insight, accurate and absoulte truth are refreshing and vastly appreciated to say the least. Having served 2 tours in Vietnam and seeing what the media did to us when we came home this is a breath of life for our men and women serving in harms way. Your dedication to them by itself spells volumes of hope and belief in what we're doing there and the courage and strength of those serving in harms way. Please keep the dispatches coming. The world needs to read this.

moment of truth
I have been following the surge through a friend who is on his second tour. While he is not a great correspondent, his chaplain writes an incredible blog (http://www.chrandall.com/blog/ ) and his brigade blog was pretty good too. you could read between the lines how things were changing. Michael's book does a spectacular job getting all the meaningful details of the heroic works of our soldiers out to the public. The terrorists are truly pathological murderers deserving the worst and I am not sure if the world will ever be able to fully appreciate how very special American soldiers are. Michael does a great job of providing explicit examples of both. Also a wonderful explanation of how to successfully run a counterinsurgency, including plenty honest examples of how America had forgotten how to for a dangerously long period. I am ordering extra copies to hand out. we need to get more copies to the public and get Michael back to keep reporting on our incredible soldiers!

Compelling
I ordered "Moment of Truth in Iraq" last week, and received it in record time. The book is a fabulous and well written read. When I read the story of Farah, I cried and I was angry. Why have the majority of Americans forgotten about the callousness of these murderous extremists that claim that their actions are justified by religion? I read the post newspapers every week where I work and knew that things are not what they seem as reported by the mainstream media. My husband will be reading the book next and I will be glad to pass it on to get the truth out about our men and women and the wonderful and heroic job that they are doing in Iraq. Thank you!

Wonderful, honest, and should be read by all the politicians (and media slugs) who are honest enough with themselves to get an idea of what our military is like and willing to do for the freeedom of the world. Thank you for your continued dedication. JJJ

The book
Michael, I'm here in Baghdad, and I just got the book the other day from my wife, who sent it to me. I couldn't put it down, dude! I think I finished it in a couple of hours. You're so right in the conclusion, but I'll leave that to others to read the book. THANK YOU for writing this book!!!! It'll go down as the best first "on-the-ground" account of the country here. God Bless, and thanks, Mike!

Congratulations Michael. Having spent many years in the Australian Book Publishing industry and been involved in the publication of many books including Terry Burstalƒ??s ƒ??A Soldierƒ??s Storyƒ? and Peter Pinneyƒ??s New Guinea War diaries I can say you have produced a very fine book; while your excellently observed and written on-line war dispatches carry a strength and immediacy that does justice to the situations you place yourself in to gather them. Stay as good as you are.

your book
Got the book, read it, was very impressed, especially with the explanations about counterinsurgency tactics. I have recently spoke to one of Gen Petraus' information officers, now retired, and he had many of the same views as your book. I bought a book for my pastor so he could read it as well. One of my sons is in Iraq, so this topic is close to my heart these days. Thank you for putting some factual information out about this war.
Al T , May 20, 2008
Finished The Book
I finished the book last night, and was absolutely blown away with the last chapter. Your description on how we can win or lose should be required reading for both sides of the argument. My son-in-law was in Sammara between 2004 and 2005, but his perspective has not advanced three years. I have encouraged him to read your book to understand that his service and efforts were not in vain. I knew things were not always what they seemed in Iraq, but I always believed that the Iraqis wanted to live with freedom and justice, Iraqi style, just as we do in the US. Thanks again Michael!

Great Job
What amazes me about the war in Iraq is the great gift that America has offered to the people in that country - this goes largely unsaid in our national dialogue. The opportunity the citizens of Iraq have been given, at the expense of our country is unparalleled, and your rendering of the character of the American soldier is consistent with the magnitude of this gift of circumstance. Freedom never comes without sacrifice, and without the moral high ground that you portray, we cannot hope to create an enduring free Iraq. I pray Iraqis (and American citizens) choose to sieze the day.
Chad , May 21, 2008
Amazing Book!
Hubby and I just finished the book together. We actually took turns reading it to each other. He has a lot of insight because he reads the newspaper and seems to know more about the war and all the politics than I do. So I was able to ask questions and we discussed things as I went along. We have two sons (almost 3) serving in the military. One son is getting ready for his third tour over there. I started reading your blogs during his first tour because I couldn't get accurate information from the main stream media. It has been refreshing to have a bird's-eye view into the truth of what is going on over there; it helps me feel that my son's service really means something. Thank you for your blogs, thank you for your book. You are an amazing person, and God holds a special place for you some day in Heaven.

Michael, I just finished reading the Moment of Truth and thank you for your work and putting yourself in harms way to get the truth about what's really going on in Iraq. If I only listened to the media I would be so dishearted but reading your book brings me such hope. I think it should be required reading for all Americans. Great book-Cover photo
I just finished reading your book. Wonderful job! I've been looking for information about Iraq without the spin for a long time. I believe you've accomplished that. The cover picture and accompanying story brought tears to my eyes. . It ranks right up there with the photos taken of the police officer and fireman removing Bailey Almond from the Murrah building in Oklahoma City after the bombing.

Just returned from a quick trip to IQ central. After two deployments to the country, your dispatches have always filled the gaps and provided the context to my own observations. In some respects, the book is almost a let down after some the detailed dispatches--but definitely a good introduction to your work.

Fantastic job---wonderful education
What I most appreciate is you speak through and for so many of the people you have been with over there. Wonderfully inspiring. My grandson served 2 tours USMC, and I took your advice and thanked him and his buddies for their duty again. I think I'll send my congressman a copy too.

Thank you.
Michael, Thank you for your incredible work. I learned more about the war, our troops, and the Iraqi people reading your 227 page book than I ever did in the countless speeches, newspaper articles, and media coverages that I have followed the past 5 years. I truly hope our country will elect a President strong enough to continue what we've started, insightful and intelligent enough to understand the situation, and humble enough to focus on accomplishing an amazing feat, rather than try to out-do President Bush. You are a truly gifted writer. Thanks for putting your life on the line to educate the American people so that we can all have our own personal moment of truth. God Bless You and God Bless Our Troops!

Patriotism Revival
It's too bad Patriotism has been given a bad name in todays dishonest media. Michael Yon's writings bring a new meaning a to the word and should be required reading in all social studies, American history and literature courses. Our countries present sources of information have been hijacked by left wing socialists and communists telling lies about our President and our troops and in so doing inflaming the hatred of ignorant brainwashed masses in the middle east, here at home, and elsewhere in the world. Moment of Truth rips apart the fabric of the deceitful media and parts the curtain on the realities of our brave men and women of our volunteer military. The honesty and gut ripping truth of Michaels reporting should be a guiding light of what it means to be a true American patriot and hero. Our present day America is in real danger of being devolved into a false perception of tyranny by the output our own media and borders on treason in my observation. Michael is a true American patriot and hero and his writings should be in a prominent place along with all the other American patriots who fought and died for our great nation. I purchased Michaels book as my humble way of supporting his efforts and wish I afford could do more. I hope that many other lovers of America will do the same.

Moment of Truth In Iraq
Just spent a week in the Outer Banks with your new Book, Moment of Truth In Iraq. I was Honorably Discharged from the Marine Corps in 1981, and have been following the WAR since it began. There were times in your book where I was brought to tears and other times I was encouraged beyond words. If more reports were made by men of integrity like you, only good could come of it. You, and all the brave men and women who continue to serve in this WAR while others "go to the Mall" are in my Prayers.

I spent 2 1/2 weeks in Iraq in Feb. of 2007. Reading Michaels book remined me of being back in CPIC and staying in the trailers as I moved from FOB to FOB. I met some of the greatest people there some who I think of daily. Reading this book is exactly what I saw and heard while there. I only wish I could go back to do it all again. Great job this book ought ot be in every American home and in every school kids back pack.

What A Book
Micheal, I read your book in 2 hours. Too bad the MSM is so caught up with the majority of democrats that the war is lost in Iraq. I heard Nancy Pelosi state that the down turn of casualties is because of Iran backing off. Maybe it is time for her and Harry Reed "This War Is Lost", to read this book!!! Barry ALLONS

What an insightful book
Michael: Just finished your book and have purchase two others to give to my military sons. You state so boldly the professionalism of our military and of the progress that we are making in Iraq. I am seeing positive stories about the successes in Iraq in the MSM (USA Today) We are winning.......we have the greatest generation of fighting young men and women that we ALL should be proud of. Keep on doing your great work and I encourage everyone reading these posts to support Michael and his great work!!

Thank you for a wonderful book
I can't thank you enough for the awesome book. I received my autographed copy and started reading. I couldn't put it down. Finally, someone who gets it right. I don't want to hear excuses from any politician, government worker or others who say all is lost or everything is just fine. This book should be required reading for every American and everyone who wants to become an American. I am urging everyone I know to buy a copy or at least contribvute online so we can keep this talented man in Iraq or Afghanistan or any other place that needs the light of day to reveal the truth on the ground. I also bought a copy of the book for all of my kids, my parents and my sister. Thank you so much for all you have endured to bring this story home. God bless you and watch over you.

Should be mandatory reading for anybody holding elected office, or voting for anybody, or working in government, or living in the U.S. or anywhere else for that matter. Best book I've read in quite awhile. Thanks for being there, and for writing the book.

A Journalistic Masterpiece
Without question, Michael Yon ranks amongst the finest war correspondents the United States has ever produced. Moment of Truth in Iraq is a journalistic masterpiece worthy of the valiant men and women to whom this book is dedicated.

Wonderful reading
Michael, thank you so much for writing this book. I've cried, I've laughed and I've gotten downright angry. I have two sons serving in the U.S.M.C. One is in Ramadi now and the other will be leaving in the fall. Too bad we can't challenge every politician on the left and right and everyone in between to read it as well as everyone else who questions the war. Reckon there would be some folks that would see things differently? God bless you Michael. You are in my prayers.

Moment of Truth
Dear Michael I've just read Moment of Truth. It is a great book and a valuable book. Truly, our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan are the Greatest Generation. Also, I am filled with sympathy and hope for the long-suffering people of Iraq. They have been put through a meat grinder. God bless you Michael. Be safe.

Read, cried, laughed ...
I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful book. If you are allowed to go back into Afghanistan, I look forward to another book based on your observations there. I also looked forward to "Tuesdays with Mouyad" when it's published.

Thank you for all you do
I just finished "Moment of Truth in Iraq" and it's great to see that there are journalists who will put their necks on the line and see the REAL truth. I have served two tours in Afghanistan (I just returned), one tour in Iraq, and will be going back to Afghanistan in July. After reading your book I have purchased many others as gifts to give to my more "leftist-liberal" friends who refuse to educate themselves on the truth. I am glad that you pointed out the mistakes made in these efforts to free the world of these murderous villians. I agree that it would be important for the Executive Branch to admit to these mistakes and show how we have recovered and continue to win the hearts and minds of the people in both countries. I believe that this would do a lot for the trust of the people in America for their elected leaders... But, I fear that the population of the United States is all too complacent and that they believe the inaccurate media portrayals more than the truth. It's hard to be doing something that you believe in and come home and feel out of place around friends and family. I know that with more journalists like you this can change. Keep up the good work. Only one problem
My only issue with this book is that it was way too short. I read it too fast and you haven't writin anything new lately on your website. I'm going through withdrawels here. Need more.

Thank You
Michael, Your last sentence, "What are we going to do?" is why I offered my copy to any of my buddies who can put emotion and belief aside and apply some critical thinking to your accounts. This perspective is too valuable to sit on my bookshelf. Best wishes, Paul Sullivan

Moment of Truth
I just finished reading your very eloquent and insightful book. I had the local library buy it for me, and now it will be available for others to read. Although I had followed your blog from the early days (2004?) and had seen the cover photo, after reading the book, I really looked at it. It brought tears to my eyes. God bless you and all men and women in our great military. Janice Denison

Moment of Truth In Iraq
Michael, I just picked up my eagerly awaiting copy of your book. I have been following your dispatches for some time now and would like to thank you for the work that you are doing in bringing the truth to light. I have spoken with, and bought many drinks for, returning vets. and the one constant theme is how dismayed they are at they way the media is portraying the war and convoluting public opinion. Thankfully there is someone on the ground giving of themselves to bring the reality to the world who needs to know. Just one quick thought you might find interesting. I bought my copy at my local Barnes and Noble here in Irving, Texas. Being a direct kind of guy, I went straight to the customer service desk so that I could be led directly to the book. The woman told me they had 7 copies available. When we got to the current affairs section there were seemingly none to be found. She then went to check the end caps to see if they were on display. No dice. Then she went to check in the back and again no luck. Then she got a manager and they still couldn't find it. Then as I was about to give up, I found a solitary copy on the shelf I had overlooked. I found it amusing that your book which is on the bestseller list was "inexplicably" no where to be found. I advised the manager that it would be prudent to locate the other copies and perhaps order more due to this being one of the more important works of our time. Thank you again for your effort and sacrifice to bring truth to the needy masses. God bless and protect you and our servicemen and women! Jay

Most deserved pride
The pride that I feel as an American is amplified every time I read your work, whether it is a dispatch or your book. There are some truly amazing souls in Iraq, American, Coalition and Iraqi, citizens, police, military and civilians, who deserve to be recognized, and are because of your work, that would most certainly go under the radar if it were entirely up to most of the mainstream media outlets. The MSM jam quite a bit of truth-radar, but thanks to your bravery, we are at least able to get a glimpse of truly special and historic events, and true valor. The courage that these people show, have shown, and continue to show, that you are able to convey to us in such a clear and guileless light, is so damn inspiring, that my chest literally feels about to burst every time I finish a chapter or a dispatch. Keep it up, brother, and may God's will be success in Iraq. Hip-hip hooray for Iraq; you will prevail against evil and your pride is most deserved. Keep strong. Anbar Province (civilian capacity)

A Great Book
I finished reading Moment of Truth in Iraq yesterday, after getting it a couple of days ago, and I just want to say that it's a really great book. I really appreciate all the hard work the American soldiers are doing in Iraq, and I'm really glad that things are going better now. I'm from Sweden, and here we almost don't hear anything about all the positive things that are going on in Iraq. The media is really left-leaning and anti-US. It's sad, and I'm glad that the internet exists so that I could get to know about this wonderful book, and then order it to read. I hope every leading politician in the United States will read this book, and learn. We cannot afford to lose this war. Thanks, Michael. You're doing a wonderful job.

Great Book
Thank you so much Michael for what you do for the troops and for America, you are the voice in the wilderness. You tell it like it is, and that is so important. We need to hear the bad stuff, because war is ugly, but why can't we celebrate with all the good stuff our troops are doing. Why wouldn't we want to be proud of our sons and daughters and the miracles they are performing daily? I am halfway through your Moment of Truth in Iraq, and can't put it down. I am married to a 20 year vet and have always been proud of our brave men and women, but never so much as I am today. You are telling their story of needing to adapt to a new way of thinking, and a new way of doing things and they are succeeding. I truly hope that both our presidential candidates take you up on your offer to visit Iraq with you because it is SO vitally important that they stay the course and make this successful. God bless our troops, you, America and Iraq!!

The Book & Maj. Scialdone's reply
Michael- The book is a masterpiece and should be required reading for anyone who is going to vote for President and/or Congress this next election. Your book is now in our public library and hopefully others will read it soon. Maj. Scialdone: First of all, thank you for the service you and your brothers have given this country and the world. Words of thanks are hardly enough, but that's all I can offer. However, I feel you missed the mark in your criticism of Mr. Yon. As an independent reader, I feel that his minimal of mentioning the Marines was not a slight, but just him relaying what he has witnessed personally in the field. Though his mention of the Marines did not equal in volume the writing of the Army, his admiration and respect were there regardless. The key to this book is the descriptions of the bonds that have been built not within an individual unit or a particular corps, but among ALL of the forces who are working for a common goal......the building of a new ally and a new republic in the Middle East. We have enough enemies as it is without trying to make them within our own service branches. If I remember correctly, hardly a word has been mentioned about the Navy, the Air Force, or the Coast Guard, but aren't they all performing a necessary duty? The fact that the bulk of his personal experiences were with Army forces should not be an issue that causes one to read or not to read his book.

Kudos to Yon!
Mr. Yon, I just finished devouring both of your books in less than a week, and I look forward to more of your views and writings in the future. The fact that you have tools like 'Maj. Scialdone' crying here with his "I'm more important than you!" attitude about how he thinks you should have written your own book, while also insulting the brave warriors (And Marines) you DID embed with as "not good enough" in his armchair General's eyes, only galvanizes what you convey in your pages in this book about everything that was done wrong at the start of this war and the lessons we learned by leaders of MEN such as Gen Petraeus (at great cost of blood, sweat and tears) from when the good Major did his time during a war where the last battle WAS that scene of a chopper leaving the embassy roof you dread so much to see happen here. This war cannot be won with the "me first!" and "I'm more important than you!" attitude that so many old leaders put out to pasture seem to still be stuck on stupid with, and it's refreshing to see that the soldiers and Marines you have encountered do NOT feel this way either. Thank you for your tireless endeavors in the field, and stay safe.

Michael: Have read your book and feel it is an accurate assessment of what went wrong in Iraq and how our brave men and women are doing things right now and ARE winning the War in Iraq. Michael, I'm only to about the sixth chapter and I must thank you. I have a boyfriend currently in Baghdad, Iraq right now so I get this feeling when I read words such as yours. I rarely ever see media with hope for Iraq, it's all negative. I want to thank you for bringing to everyone the truth of what's going on over there and the honor and thanks that all of our troops deserve! Thanks, Amanda

Thanks and kudos
Really appreciate your story -- it makes my wife and I feel so much better about what our son is doing in Baghdad right now. He's a platoon leader with a National Guard Sapper unit and goes out of the wire everyday. I've been emailing him quotes from the book and he shares them with his soldiers. He points out that every vehicle in his platoon has sparkling clean windshields at all times! ;-)

Thank you for your enormous sacrafice in reporting the actual story from Iraq. I just finished reading your book, and I wish it were required reading in the US Congress. Your Words
Michael, I'm 3/4 of the way through your book. Sometimes your words and sentences are so simple, so short, so well stated to the situation being described that my blood just runs cold when I read them. THAT is a well written book!!!! Thank you for your encouraging reporting. I have tremendously enjoyed learning tricks and events that are never reported to us. When the Iraqis were discussing the 7 rules and an oath, I'm hearing us in the states and thinking "They've got it!" My heart goes out to these many brave Iraqis. Many, many thanks to our soldiers for protecting them as they transition into having their own country.

A book about photography without that many photographs
I expected more photographic content in a book written by a photographer. I bought this book for the photos and was disappointed to find only a middle section with a few photographs. If you want to read a book about the Iraq War - I recommend "House to House". I was still a good read, though.

AirScan
Hello Michael and thank you for writing this book. I am a 59-year old Vietnam vet helicopter pilot, who now flyƒ??s for AirScan out of Tal Afar, Iraq. I appreciate your mention of our organization on page 58 and the recognition that we are participating in the efforts to protect our troops through better ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance). As an old soldier from the U.S. Army, and a now retired Coastie, I am very proud to still be able to participate in the 'fray' and to know that our video transmissions and other work assists the commanders on the ground to pursue the bad guys and protect the good guys. Excellent writing! I look forward to your future books. Best Regards, Tom.

Loved the book
My son is now in Iraq, and as a mom I worry all the time. I was afraid to read your book, thinking it would be too much information. I am worrying less after reading your book. Until I read Moment of Truth in Iraq I had no real understanding of how the surge was working, how the Awakening may never have happened without the surge, and how blessed we are to have soldiers and commanders who are intelligent and fearless. I feel my son is in the company of greatness. Bless you for illuminating this, it took some of my fear away. I just sent him the book. I am going to the store to buy more. I feel your book should be required reading. It could be an education for the Democrat running for the presidency.

the elephant in the romm
Michael I just finished your book and enjoyed it very much - I would not quibble with any of the analysis and conclusions that you come to - No my only problem with your analysis is that it ignores the great big elephant in the room - and that is ISLAM. I am afraid that without a deep understanding of the impact of Islam amongst the people in the area any analysis can only be one-dimensional at best - in my opinion you make the mistake that most westerners make - because we don't attach much importance to religion we assume that other peoples are the same and are at heart they are rational actors working with their self interest as the prime motivator. THIS IS NOT true when it comes to Islam - I don't know how much you understand about ISLAM but I am sure that with your experience with cults you are highly qualified to Analise it as it has many similarities with CULTS. Anyway keep up the good work and I will continue to support you.

Loved It.
Michael, thanks for sharing the experience of what our troops and you have seen, heard and done. I am glad to hear the critism where it is due and also the praise for the accomplishments and successes. If only our politicians would do the same and realise it isn't about them but our troops and the Iraqi people. For too many people, it has become a against Bush thing where accomplishments cannot be acknowledged and failures promoted. It has also been the reverse for some of the right as well, not acknowledging we made mistakes. My wife was especially touched by the images in your book and cried when she saw the cover and read the description of the image. I have sent my copy off to my Dad in Nova Scotia for him to read and am getting ready to order another for myself. Thank you and the troops for all the work, sacrifices and the rest of the things you do. May you be all blessed and protected.

All gave some....
Michael's book is not a history of Operation Iraqi Freedom, nor about who had it toughest, who got there first, or who stayed the longest - it is about the war in Iraq reaching a moment of truth. And that truth is that we are making progress -- real, palpable and measurable, and the country of Iraq stands at a moment of change if the Iraqi people and government will only seize it. With due respect to Maj(Ret) Scialdone, where's the respect for Michael's book, as the comments are unlike both an officer and a Marine? And regarding the 100 men that he says his unit lost at Fallujah, I am unclear -- 100 killed and/or wounded, and during what timeframe? In the second battle of Fallujah (Operations Phanton Fury/ al-Fajr in November 2004), 51 US troops were killed (from among four battalions of the 1st Marines -- including 3/5, an Army brigade combat team, two Army battalions, SEALS, CCT, SEABEES, and others). The 3d Bn/5th Marines homepage (http://www.i-mef.usmc.mil/div/5mar/3bn/heaven1.asp) lists 33 Marines killed in Iraq to date (5 in OIF I, 19 in OIF II to include Fallujah, 9 in OIF 05-07). In the words of Billy Ray Cyrus, ".... all gave some, and some gave all....", and 3d Bn/5th Marines were no exception. In fact, 3/5 had very tough neighborhoods during its tours. Fighting was fierce in Fallujah, but also in An Najaf, Mosul, Tal Afar, Iskandarޮyah, Baghdad, Karbala, Sadr City, Mahmudiyah, Yusufiyah, Al Kut, Hit, Al Basrah, Salman Pak, Haditha, Ramadi, Korean Village, Baghdadi, Bayji, Jurf as Sakhr, and dozens of other places, some of which you can't find on a map. Michael Yon was in some of these fights, reporting from the cutting edge, not a hotel roof. Michael did embed with real warriors in real units, for long periods of time -- armed only with a camera and notebook. Shame on you, Teufelhund, for your cheap attempt to question the credentials and reputation of an excellent reporter, blogger, and photo-journalist, just because he didn't write about your unit specifically. If you read the book, you know that Michael was not afraid to go out and see the fight up close and personally (unlike most of the 'journalists' covering the war), he was there for a very long time, and out nearly every day, but he was just one man in a very big fight. Be proud of your contributions and service, Dark Horse, for as a retired Marine you have given more than the Nation had a right to expect. Mourn your fallen and wounded. But remember that you were not alone in the fight, and yours was not the only fight. I know first-hand of Michael's courage, integrity, accuracy, and desire to report the truth, and his book is spot on. Michael has reported it as he saw it - first-hand, and his premise is worthy of your attention. Khop khun krap, Michael, and best wishes and safe travels in your coming journeys. Hope the legs are up to the next task. The original Lion 7 (which must remain good enough for this post!)

I just finished it earlier this afternoon. I couldn't put it down! I loved it, and when my dad saw it, he picked it up and started reading it. He finished it that evening, and then recommended it to a friend's mom. Our son, who recently turned 21, is on his second tour to Iraq. The first one was cut short after 3 weeks due to an IED attack in Mosul. Telling It Like It Is
Just finished reading "Moment Of Truth". A great read. As a retired Canadian Army Officer I would like to sincerely thank you for telling it like it is in Iraq and with your article "Where Eagles Dare" in Afghanistan. Canadian main stream newspapers would not dare publish an honest article like "Where Eagles Dare" - too war like for Canadians - most Canadians believe their armed forces should be used for national disasters or "peace keeping" thanks to the socialist and wimpy policies and philosophies started by Pierre Elliot Trudeau in the 70's and 80's. Keep up the great work - we need the truth, and keep safe.

Moment of Truth in Iraq is a gripping read. I was shocked to find my cousin's final moments described in print. Up till that point we only knew John Cooper died in the IEDs blast in Mosul. I cried but found solace just in knowing he did not suffer and that those responsible were dealt with. I will let his mother know what I have learned from this book. Thanks for the truth.

Marines and your book, Part II
I normally read a book of this size in a matter of hours, but I have found myself taking much more time to comprehend and get an understanding of what is actually happening in the war. Like Maj. Scialdone, I am also a retired Marine and like Maj. Scialdone I know a lot of Marines, active duty and retired. Unlike Maj. Scialdone, I rave about this book to those Marines. This book is not about whether or not the Marines or Army is performing heroically in Iraq in the face of all the negative press that has been written about them - it's about the best military force in the history of this world doing a job and doing it damn well. It's not about us versus them in a sense of Marines versus the Army, it's all about us versus them in a sense of America versus those that would do us harm. What difference does it make if a member of al Qaeda ends up in the sights of a warrior wearing an Army insigna instead of one wearing a Marine insignia. The end result is the same. To Michael, I apologize on behalf of the good Major. He apparently suffers from a lack of proper training by a qualified Staff NCO or was one of those rare OCS grads who thought they were too good to take instruction from a senior enlisted man. Semper Fi Michael. I'm looking forward to your next book. John Lewis MGySgt USMC Retired Millington, TN

Moment of Truth
Long ago I was chaplain for 2-16 IN when 1LT Mark Bieger talked with me about his concern for the demands the Army was placing upon him and his family life. I remember encouraging him to think it through and see if it he could find a way to balance it all. I don't know how that turned out. However, I was confident this young West Pointer had the goods. From the picture on Michael Yon's book, my assessment was right on target. I knew Mark Bieger was the right stuff; subsequent events have proved that assessment to be spot on. Congratulations to Michael Yon for a great book and to Mark Bieger who has made us all proud to be Americans. CH Gore, OIF, 2004.

To say "thank you" isn't enough
I'm graduating with a B.S. in Computer Science in May. I'm also getting married in May. In June, I leave for BCT and OCS for (hopefully) MI in the U.S. Army. In two days I'll be driving 900 miles to watch my older brother graduate AIT, as he enlisted in the Army to be an MP. We are following in our father's footsteps, who served for over twenty years in the Army. I needed this book not because I want to hear about the heroism of our troops, nor to reassure me that we can or are winning in Iraq. I needed this book because I needed the truth about what's happening over there. Having finally finished it (it took a backseat to some school stuff for a week) I can honestly say that this is the most important book I've ready throughout my entire college experience. To Michael Yon, and all members of the U.S. Military, Thank You. To anyone who hasn't read this book, please go pick up a copy and read it. The more people that understand what's going in the world the better. I promise you won't be disappointed.

This IS the TRUTH
I have been fortunate enough to work with Michael first hand in Iraq. He is the preeminent non-military authority on the war in Iraq. He truly cares about the Soldiers and their work. A lot of journalists are hard to work with, are prima donnas, or are too sissy to really get out there and report from the front. Not Michael. When he hits the ground in an AO he wants to get out with the Soldiers immediately. No lounging around a Brigade or Battalion HQ. Straight to to COP. And Michael, your comments about certain journalists not wanting the war to end is spot on. We know who they are (especially one particular female journalist), and it really is unfortunate. They cover the war for the wrong reasons: to make their careers, while you have covered the war to tell the truth, whether good or bad, and to tell the Soldiers' stories. I really enjoy reading the progress of Rashid. Any updates you could give on 60th Street would be great. When we were leaving it was being brought up for a "Doura-esque" recovery. Really wondering how that worked out.

Michael, You, Bill Roggio and Michael Totten were the saving grace for and Old Sailor who was bloody tired of the B/S put out by our Media!! That being Said, Major Scialdone I believe the Army felt the same way when the Marines got all the credit @ Guadalcanal when the Army was there to. So far as I can tell the Army Green Beret, the Navy Seals, Air Force, Air Force Special ops. US Navy Delta Force, US Coast Guard and the US Army all listed in no particular order on a cold morning in Idaho.. A team is only as good as itƒ??s members, all of them. A do not buy is a bit childish for a Marine Major,,,

Thank you Michael, and a response to Maj. Scialdone
Michael, Firstly, thank you for the personal courage, integrity and commitment it took to bring to the world the true "on-the-ground" perspective that you have with your book. You obviously never lost the qualities it takes for a young soldier to make it through Q course and A school! I'm a former 11C and current captain in the US Air Force, yet haven't had the privilege of serving in theater. Consequently, to get an honest read of the work our people are doing there, and to read the stories of the courageous, innovative, and principled actions of our folks was not only inspiring, but humbling. I've had the honor to serve our country a lot of years in many countries, and while I've always been proud of my country, my service, and my brethren in arms, your book reinvigorated my faith the sons and daughters of America are once again showing the world through their deeds and commitment that our nation truly is the city on the hill, and the paragon for decency, generosity, and principle that we aspire to be; despite having stumbled we still seek our true north on the path of righteousness and goodness. Is there another nation on earth, or in the history of the world, that has given as much of itself to other peoples as has ours? Your book shows the world the men and women of our armed forces represent the true heart and soul of America, as they're the sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, and grandparents of our nation from across the entire social strata of our country. They embody the true American values, and with their courage, commitment, and dedication to the mission of making a better Iraq for the Iraqis are the best possible goodwill ambassadors we could have. To Major Scialdone: Sir, with all due respect to you, your 25 years of service, and your Corps, you're not only incredibly wrong in your reaction to Michael's book, but in whining so publicly and childishly (and barely literately) over a **perceived** slight you've represented not only yourself poorly, but also your fellow Marines far less well than they deserve. I hold the Corps in very high regard, however you, sir, have represented your Corps so far less commendably than one would expect from a Marine officer. Your reaction is shameful, and deserving of the scorn heaped upon it to date. As a former Army infantryman, I take great exception to your characterization of Soldiers as something other than "real warriors"; it's a slap in the face to every Soldier that has faced enemy fire, been wounded, or died serving our nation. How dare you sit in your retired armchair and disparage our men who are under fire every day by stating they're not "real warriors"? It's the very essence of sniveling, juvenile, adolescent behavior I would have expected a retired officer to have long outgrown. A laugh at the expense of our brethren in uniform is always good fun, and we should all take pride our our own branch, but you have gone beyond the pale with your statement. Inter-service rivalry is a wonderful thing, but those of us who still serve never forget "U.S." comes before our branch of service. You claim to have been at the Chosin Reservoir (although you misspelled it) and Vietnam [http://www.network54.com/Forum/169291/thread/1174780849/last-1174851529/OOH+RAH], but your comments questioning the warrior spirit of our current fighting men would seem to give lie to that claim for I've yet to meet a combat veteran that would so publicly disrespect their fellow warriors (other than in good natured jest of the inter-service kind, which your comments clearly were not). Major Scialdone, you, sir, should be ashamed. Once again Michael, thank you so much for your work on this book, and in the AOs to bring us the true story of the guys on the ground who are getting the job done. Thank you for YOUR service to the truth! Capt. JD

Moment of Truth
Michael, I received your book for Christmas, completing its reading last weekend. Thanks to your insight I have gained a greater understanding of how things were turned around in Iraq, along the way gaining renewed respect for those who in service of their country have taken on a most difficult task and come close to achieving what at one time looked impossible. Keep up the good work and look after yourself, we need your reporting as a way of getting some appreciation of what is really going on in these far flung places. Best wishes for 2009. Barry Sheridan

You
Michael; I am digging out of bankruptcy so can not afford to give you support at this time. Let me say, however, that through my part time second job at Barnes and Noble I was able to read your book. Thank you for giving us a perspective that no one else has. While I am a pro Iraq war conservative, I am tired of all the so called reporting with an agenda. Reading your dispatches and book make me realize that while we may not have been right going in, we have to get it right and finish. Also, as the son of a vet, and as someone who has worked with many military in the past, I am thankful for the way you portray them as truly human, concerned about people and trying to do the right thing. You are carrying out a vital mission and I must say you deserve praise from all Americans.

Moment of Truth
Mr. Yon, I am a homeschool mom of 2. I found out about your book and website from an interview you did I believe on Fox News. I grew up as an Air Force brat and have a special heart for the military and am always stressing to my kids the special sacrifice that the soldiers and their families make so we can be free. I reserved a copy of your book "Moment of Truth in Iraq" at the local library and picked it up yesterday. Well I must tell you I started reading it yesterday after our school day was done and could not put it down! I finished your book at about 1:30am. My daughter is 16 and we do alot of current event and worldview work together for her schooling. She witnessed first hand my total absoption in your book and is going to start reading the book as part of her schooling today. I have been so starved for true information to share with my children (and for myself) about the war and what our soldiers go through to keep us safe. Your book and website are wonderful. My husband and myself sacrifice alot so that we can teach our children at home and instill our values into their hearts. That also includes being able to think and be discerning and seeing the world as it really is and hopefully becoming an adult with intergrity who can make a positive contribution to our country in whatever they may ultimately pursue in life. Money is extremely tight in our family but I intend to support your effort as soon as we get paid on Friday. Mr. Yon you are also on our morning prayer list as we start our school day. God Bless you!!!

The book and a mis-aligned Major..
I have one of the original signed copies, and I would have to say that it is the best book I have read in a long time. It took me all of two days to read it. I have been receiving your dispatches for several years now and I read every one of them. Your writing and desire to tell the truth definitely sets you apart from the myriad of reporters who have a schedule to keep. Now, the next issue, Major Scialdone.. I am a Marine that served from 94 to 98. As such, I fail to see how you, a Major, could be so insulting. You do a severe dishonor not only to the Corps, but to our Brothers and Sisters of the US Army. I hope that you have some good SNCO's to assist you in removing your foot from your mouth. S.F.C. Matthew I. Pionk
Mr. Yon what a great book this is. It gives the truth about what went on over in Iraq. My son s.f.c. matt pionk was with the Deuce four and what you have written in the book is what he told me. Matts platoon SGT. lost is leg by a mortor, matt under fire got him to safety and air lifted out of there. They then made Made matt platoon sgt. They patroled the remaining months without any casualtys. He received the bronze star and army commendation medal w/valor. Matt was K.I.A. on his 2nd deployment with the second stryker calvary regiment. Matt and 5 other brave heros were all killed in a house rigged to blow in the Diyala province. Gen. Brown and Col. Kurrila came to the funeral along with many other fellow soldiers to give him honor. They are all amazing people and made me so proud of him even though the pain was terrible. I have had a couple speaking engagements and I have quoted out of your book. I also brought up what Michael Moore said about baby Farah and our soldiers. What a piece of garbage he is. Any way keep up the good work as the people deserve the truth that you are giveing. Thank you for your service and you are a great american.
Thanks,
Duane Pionk

Another Duece Four soldier.
First and foremost, let me start by saying one of my favorite books I have read to date despite being the hardest read. Some of those pages took me back to a place I have long repressed. I was a member of 2nd Plt C CO back in the Duece. I was there in the chow hall that day, my platoon was manning COP Tampa when it was hit, and even accounts that you did not write about...the book took me back. Not in a bad way, just things that I think we push back into the dark corners of our mind to be able to participate in everyday life. My mother has had the book since it came out, and gave it to me some time back it wasn't just until late that I have found the courage to read it. That being said this is to Duane Pionk, I knew your son well....he was my first squad leader when I first reported to FT Lewis as a cherry private...and as I "grew up" in the Army he would always check back up on me....I am proud to say the I knew him. I was manning the radios on my Stryker When I heard the news, He will be missed greatly by all of us.

...
My god Michael the photographs alone are worth the visit to this site. They are stunning and tell an incredibly moving story. Then there are your dispatches and the book. It's such a service you are doing. This reporting is straight forward, unbiased and so informative that every person living in every country involved in this conflict ought to have the opportunity to come here and read and see for themselves what you have to say. Thanks for the incredible service you are providing. In fact there's really not enough thanks.

Great book
I picked up the book last year and i read it in one day. I was also a member of deuce four during OIF 3, i was 3rd PLT 73rd. Thank you for writing it, I really appreciate the way it was written.

Great read...thank you!
I found your site from another forum, and I got your book after reading your dispatches. The book was fantastic, and I chewed through it in less than a day. So many times the national news is just a collection of sound bites and dire stats; we rarely get this kind of reporting. I recommended this book to my wife, who is very nervous about her brother who is in a Minnesota Reserve Unit. The Unit is going to ship out for Iraq or Afghanistan in the near future, and she is pretty worried. Reading this book sheds light on what our soldiers can do, especially in tough situations in strange lands. Let's just hope that our leadership in Afghanistan have read this a time or two. We really need to get the Afghans to turn away from the Taliban. Keep up the great work, Michael. We will try to keep you reporting as soon as we can!

retired journalist
I've been following Michael's dispatches since 2005, and have come to believe he's the only combat reporter of his generation worth a damn. He's our Ernie Pyle. He has the guts to go in harm's way; not just for a couple of days, a week, a month, but time after time after time. And he has the military background and experience to understand and clarify what he sees, and what Americans need to know about their wars and about their young warriors who fight them.

Moment of truth
Michael- I was in Q-west when you were in Mosul in Summer 05. As the base dentist I was not in combat. I followed your blog and was looking forward to the next dispatch. In 2008 I was in Diwaniyah south of Baghdad when the Shiites started shooting. At FOB Echo I learned a ton. After all of that I have to say that your book is the best writing I have seen and you are doing great work. I devoured your book and when my practice in Las Vegas picks up I will gladly donate to keep you traveling and writing. Fresh and true-the best.
