Predators can carry two Hellfire missiles.  This Predator has only one.  Maybe the missile was fired or, maybe the Predator was launched with only one Hellfire (can carry two) to conserve fuel and increase range or loiter time.

I am CPT Sean Michaelson, the 572nd Military Intelligence Company Commander, 5/2 ID (SBCT), and author of the "Guerrilla Hunter Killer FM" that my guys showed you a couple of weeks ago. Today was a big day, we sent it to several members of the intelligence community IOT get the word out that we really need to re-exaime how we have been defining the enemy. Our deployment is coming to an end soon, and the surge is coming, so the more we can get our method out there the better. Hi Michael, your post is so odd to think about... even a dog knows how to impregnate a bitch... our culture is so inundated with "sex education" (using that term loosely, of course) that it's hard to comprehend not knowing certain things... definition of non-renewable resource, though...;o)

In Northern Afghanistan there is whats called the Baakah Bareesh which is Afghani men collecting young boys with pom poms on their shoes as a display of wealth, tribal power positioning, and homosexual parties.

How do you win the hearts and minds of a people who view the U.S. & allies as trying to destroy Islam. This is what's taught in the Mosques in all the house of Islam. The answer is you can't and won't ever win the hearts and minds of the Afghani, Iraqi, Yemini, Saudi, Bosnian, Somali, etc... Islamist world.

Political Islam has declared war on America and are actively winning the hearts and minds of the American people with every accommodation to the Islamists yielding to Sharia Law in America. I know this is another topic but two wars are being fought Bombs and bullets in Afghanistan/Iraq and a Stealth Jihad in America.

Michael,

I am glad you enjoyed the briefing. I took great lenghts to write the GH/K template unclassified on purpose, so it can used to define the enemy in guerrilla conflicts around the globe, not just here in Afghanistan. Only once the template is applied does it become classified.

If you are on KAF, Mr. Wilson has it waiting for you. If not I have it on my NIPR, just need to know the best way for you to recieve. If you can shoot me an email to the NIPR address I provided to post this I can respond back with it.

That opening quote from Galula also describes perfectly a region that will never have economic independence. Even if AF was able to develop a manufacturing industry, it would be hostage to PK for trading access to the sea. If the US-Coalition succeeds in bringing AF to heel, by breaking it, who will own it then?

Michael, I re-read what you wrote about the Belgian plane and the Russian plane, and I still understood you to be saying the Belgian plane was bringing supplies for our allies, followed by the Russian plane bringing weapons for our enemies!! It was mentioned in a rather subtle fashion, so correct me if I'm wrong. Why aren't we and our allies STOPPING those Russian terrorist-enablers??!!

Seems a lot of people are not getting support in the northwest, from what I hear. I read your letter as well, and read between the lines. Fortunately I don't have people up there, but unfortunately others do. I wish them good fortune. Mike if it weren't for you, the author and reporter, not blogger, and Bill Roggio, we'd be lost.

The men using boys for sex and not knowing how to get their wives pregnant is quit true. My husband has busted a bunch of compounds where he's found small rooms full of young boys, used only for sex. It's part of their culture that needs to be changed. I accept most cultures for what they are, but that's too much.

@Jodie, I may be wrong now, but earlier, maybe a year or so ago, the Russians were air dropping food to SF in the Kush. I doubt they'd be allowed at land at KAF if they were smuggling weapons. I don't know if that's changed or not.

Jodie - the F-16 is the Belgian fighter. It's delivering those weapons to our enemies pointy-side first. The Russian plane is the big one in the background, probably a transport hired out by coalition forces to bring supplies to the base. It is of Russian make, but isn't necessarily piloted by Russians.

I asked the same thing. Showed the photos to an A-10 pilot. Bottom line: no specific reason to his knowledge. Just a couple of "just in case" missiles on the wingtips.

Its not beyond the realms of possibility that Iran could try and force down a plane it accuses of entering its airspace.
Bit like the British Naval Party that they siezed a few years back

If you want to see beauty, poetry and imagery together there is no better place then the deck of an aircraft carrier while it is engaged in nighttime launch and recovery operations. They say the most dangerous place in the world is the deck of a carrier. You have to be there to understand why. I spent some time on "The Big E"...the USS Enterprise, the fleet starship..words aren't enough to describe what happens on a carrier for all hands from the cooks and bakers to the aircraft fuel and weapons handlers...

Michael, you characterizatiz e of suicide bombers as "gullible Man Dogs trained to fetch myths. The Taliban select and condition Man Dogs as precision guided weapons. They are myth guided munitions." I believe that is the kind of brutally frank language that arises from your direct experience of the war and makes you such a valuable reporter. Most editors would soften that for domestic consumption and something important would be lost. For example, I now recognize that is what I saw in Fareed Zakaria's documentary on the Mumbai attacks. It was significant that the one surviving myth guided munition was broken when confronted at the morgue with the stinking, rotting bodies of his fellow jihadis. They did not smell like perfume as promised by his trainers and that is what broke the hold of the myth. By bringing us real accounts of war you give us the opportunity to come to therms with the harsh reality we face.

There is a simple reason for the sidewinders. The F-16 was designed to have the wingtip missiles in place and actually has LESS drag with them installed than not. It would be odd to see an F-16 without either sidewinders or AMRAAMs loaded.

Beautiful photos, Mike. This old war dog sits at home and wonders if there's any way to help. My continued prayers for you are a start. As soon as I can get out from under a couple of other people's obligations, there will be a check or three also.

I was especially glad to see the Afghan Air Force Hip-C in the photo with the Reaper. As you say, quite a difference from the last time I was interested in Afghanistan, during the Soviet Occupation.

We've been using Antonov Design Bureau AN-124s to haul MRAPs and now M-ATVs into Iraq and Afghanistan for years now. They are subcontracted through Atlas Air, an American carrier and member of the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF). This arrangement frees up our C-17s and C-5s for other duties.

For those of you that read Micheal's comment "For some, their only sexual experiences are boys,men and animals" you should know that statement is 100% percent correct. Since he did go into great detail I will provide with the information that you need to see this for youself.

In 1979 when the Shah of Iran was being replaced by Ayatollah Khomeini many in Iran had not followed the teachings of Islam. This book of rules was written to show everyone within Iran what was going to be expected of them.

For those of you that thought this wasnt the case are in for a rude awakening and I suggest you begin your enlightment by reading the book of rules yourself. I will warn you now that this is offensive and many will not be able to finish this reading.

Folks, I am no fan of the Taliban, but they were rabid when it came to Ayatollah Khomeni and his followers in Iran: ie the Taliban took a northern Afghan city and butchered the Iranian diplomats in it, claiming Iran was helping those opposed to them and that Iran had not respected diplomatic immunity in 1979 so why should expect it. As to child rape (boys mainly), one of the reasons that Mullah Omar got such a following was his standing up to those warlords engaging in mass rape of boys, in front of their parents. Also, there have been a few times in Kabul when a child rapists has had a wall turned over on top of him in public (how they get this punishment is beyond me?). If the man survives he is set free. So yes, the Taliban is brutal to women and allows very young marriage of girls (ie in the Moslem world for what ever reason a families honor seems to be located between the legs of their women), but when it comes to child rape of boys and the growing of opium when the Taliban was in power, they had put a stop to it. And not just a stop to it by those who were poor and powerless, but everyone. This still does not change the fact that they were extremely cruel and brought the wrath of the US down on themselves by their own acts.

Folks, That large aircraft is a AN-124 which is in the same class as t he USAF C-5s. It is huge. One six engine version is the largest aircraft in the world. They are all now in civilian charter use, flagged out of Ukraine. The Russian AN-124s have caused a serious problem between Congress and the USAF. Congress wants to know why the USAF has to spend so much money charter of the AN-124. The USAF chief of staff made it clear that it would be almost impossible logistically for the US/NATO to operate in Afghanistan without those charters. What upsets Congress is why the USAF is chartering about every hour that the AN-124s have for freight lifts, when at the same time they want to kill some funding for modernizing the C-5s they have, in favor of building more C-17s which can not come close to filling the role the C-5 does (in heavy freight flights between the US and Afghanistan, the C-5 can do it without air to air refueling, where the C-17 requires massive tanker support and even then for ton-mile it is expensive to use the C-17 -- and NO the C-17 was not designed to replace the C-5, it was designed to replace the C-141).

Parts of Afghanistan reminds me of Vietnam after agent orange was used during de-foliage operations. So at least we now know that the de-foliage operations would not have made it any easier defeating the insurgency in Vietnam.
