U.S. contractors held in Green Zone killing, sources say.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Five American security contractors were detained in connection with the killing of another American contractor last month inside Baghdad's Green Zone, sources with knowledge of the investigation told CNN on Saturday.

Iraqi and U.S. personnel took the five into custody in an operation inside the Green Zone before dawn Friday, according to an Iraqi official involved in the investigation into the killing of James Kitterman. The five, who have not yet been charged, were being held by Iraqi security forces Saturday at a jail inside the heavily protected zone, he said.

The troops also confiscated weapons during the raid, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A top Singaporean terrorism suspect recaptured in Malaysia last month will not be extradited for at least two years, Malaysia's prime minister says.

Mas Selamat Kastari is being held for two years under Malaysia's Internal Security Act, which allows indefinite detention without trial.

He is the suspected Singapore leader of Jemaah Islamiah, blamed for attacks including the 2002 Bali bombings.

Troops kill 10 rebels in southern Philippines

Reuters
27 May 2009

MANILA, May 27 (Reuters) - Philippine troops killed 10 rogue Muslim rebels in a massive sea-air-land assault on a remote island in the south on Wednesday, a navy admiral said.

The military launched the offensive, backed by navy boats and helicopter gunships, a day after renegade Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) guerrillas freed three teachers they held for over four months on Basilan island, said Rear Admiral Alexander Pama, navy commander in the south.

"We lost one lieutenant in the assault operations, but we got 10 of them," Pama told Reuters.

Richard Oppel is an excellent war correspondent.  I first got to know him in 2005 in Iraq.  That this story is coming from Mr. Oppel indicates there is something to it.  Now that the case undoubtedly has reached General Petraeus, I would expect that an investigation into the facts has begun.

Security turnaround in Afghanistan in 18 months a must: Mullen

24 May 2009
AFP

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The US military must "dramatically" stem a three-year slide in the security situation in Afghanistan over the next year and a half to make room for civilian efforts to stabilize the country, the US military chief said Sunday.

Admiral Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the military solution was not enough but the buildup in US forces would be used to turn around the security situation.

"I think with the troops that we put on the ground there, that over the next 12 to 18 months, we have to dramatically change the security situation and stem the tide," he said.

This photo pushes my laughter button every time it pops up.  You never know what our soldiers are going to do next.  Despite the combat, there is a great deal of humor to be had out there in the war.  The photo even cracked up Secretary Gates.
