Paul Bedard
Published 02 August 2009 July 31, 2009 By Paul Bedard, Washington Whispers In another twist that raises new questions about a New York Times Pulitzer Prize-winning story, the Government Accountability Office has given its blessing to a wartime Department of Defense program that briefed retired military officers about operations in Iraq and Afghanistan before they went on TV to talk about the conflicts. "There is no doubt that DoD attempted to favorably influence public opinion with respect to the administration's war policies" with the program, said the GAO. "However, we conclude that these activities did not violate the publicity or propaganda prohibition." Please Click here to view the entire article in the U.S.News and World Report

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Five American security contractors were detained in connection with the killing of another American contractor last month inside Baghdad's Green Zone, sources with knowledge of the investigation told CNN on Saturday. Iraqi and U.S. personnel took the five into custody in an operation inside the Green Zone before dawn Friday, according to an Iraqi official involved in the investigation into the killing of James Kitterman. The five, who have not yet been charged, were being held by Iraqi security forces Saturday at a jail inside the heavily protected zone, he said. The troops also confiscated weapons during the raid, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Please click here to read the entire story on CNN.com

Richard Oppel Jr.
25 May 2009 Richard Oppel is an excellent war correspondent. I first got to know him in 2005 in Iraq. That this story is coming from Mr. Oppel indicates there is something to it. Now that the case undoubtedly has reached General Petraeus, I would expect that an investigation into the facts has begun.
