Joseph L. Galloway co-authored the best-selling book, "We Were Soldiers Once … and Young." He is the Military Affairs consultant for Knight Ridder’s Washington Bureau, but his career as a reporter started in his teens. When most young men are just getting around to deciding their major, the 19-year-old Joe was already the UPI statehouse bureau chief for Kansas City. He spent many years oversees, as bureau chief in Tokyo, Vietnam, Jakarta, India, Singapore and Moscow. Starting in 1965, he served three tours in Vietnam for UPI, and he was awarded a Bronze Star –the only civilian to receive that accolade during that war–for rescuing wounded American soldiers under heavy enemy fire during the battle at Landing Zone X-Ray in the Ia Drang Valley on Nov. 15, 1965. General H. Norman Schwarzkopf has called Joe "The finest combat correspondent of our generation — a soldier’s reporter and a soldier’s friend."
Joe Galloway is a truth teller. Here’s one of his latest op-ed pieces:
