Japanese Aid to Afghanistan II

E-mail Print

12 November 2009

I asked General David Petraeus, General (ret.) Barry McCaffrey, and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, about the Japanese decisions on Afghanistan.  (The Japanese plan to recall their refueling capacity but to add $5 billion dollars in development aid over five years.)  All three responded.  This from Geoff Morrell, who is the spokesman for Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.

"We welcome Japan's additional contribution and its continued partnership in the stabilization and reconstruction of Afghanistan."

Answers from Generals Petraeus and McCaffrey are here.

Please give the gift of independent reporting. Your gift goes far and is used for transport, lodging, living expenses, satellite communications and for repairing and replacing gear that fails due to the rigors of the battlefields.  Millions of people, in more than a hundred countries, see these photos and words.  Your generosity goes very far, and is greatly appreciated.

Any "reconstruction" of Afghanistan must include the destruction of the drug trade and the establishment of tribal businesses for the common people. Otherwise, it will just be monies funneled into the next wave of terrorism.
