A wonderful article that shows how nations separated by culture, religion and geography has something greater in common..."Compassion and willingness to help one another"... Unfortunately, the world is too busy with their personal gains.

A very insightful article showing the efforts and cooperation of the governments of Lithuania, Afghanistan, Japan and the United States. Great Pictures Michael, keep it up ... =) ... May this serve as an eye opener and motivation to people whom can and want to make a difference in the future.

Well done TEAM!! - Ming-Ray Hsieh

Hey,hey, hey!! areyou reading this or not??? Can't you stop shooting yourselves in the foot??!! Yes,you can Yankee doodle dandy. Simply stop empowering Islamic apologists and practitioners in Afghanistan and instead empower only those Afghans for whom freedom and democracy, peace, and a little prosperity are much more important than Islam or bowing to Arabs, pakis or Iranians or other Islamic fascists. There are lots of Afghans in the country right now who prefer peace and prosperity over religion or tribalism and if these who without any power now ,are empowered,we will definitely begin to see progress and the US and NATO will be able to proclaim success. Please try this proposal, you wont be sorry. Here is how to do it.1-bring educated afghans from inside and outside the country and give them power and responsibilities including power of implemintation and enforcement;exclude any one who was educated in Arab countries,Iran, pakistan or anyone who is known to be an islamic apologist. 2- disempower all religious groups, families, and those connected to Arabs, pakis, iranians, opium trade,or those who are well known to be corrupt, local people know these thugs. When this is done,i assure you success is guaranteed as these newly empowered afghans will take care of the rest.If you need more help, contact me right here. Please, lets not make our sacrifices go down the drain,i just don't believe this is what any of you want to see happen.come on,give me a break, don't tell me you can't do it!!! - khush Haal Khan

...can't afford not to

I recently changed my donations to Michael, from an occasional 20 bucks to $25 a quarter. A little while later, I asked myself, "Should I have done that? Money is getting tight, and we have a lot of expenses. Can I afford this?"

All it takes is for me to read a new post and the answer becomes obvious: I can't afford not to support what Michael does. I am a former journalist, and this is some of the most compelling reportage I've ever seen.

So all you who are reading Michael, suck it up! Support this noble effort. - 50GreenDodge

Hopefully Mr. Yon will never be a Walter Kronkite or Dan Rather in his reporting. Instead of welcoming journalists, I use the term loosely, in our ranks in Viet Nam we should have shot them. - Jim Burke

"I only wish Walter Cronkite got to see excellence in journalism resurrected in you, Mr. Yon. Outstanding."

I second the sentiment that Michael Yon is one of the few outstanding journalists left in the USA, but Cronkite excellent? His leftist propaganda out of Vietnam lost the support of naive Americans who at the time believed in the honesty of the MSM. The legacy of Cronkite is a generation of journalistic boobs who confidently predicted defeat in Iraq on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox et al. - mike

Michael your work is excellent and I look forward to the reporting, photo's, and insights.
What I'm having a hard time understanding is why in the heck are we wasting lives & money
in this God forsaken land?
The Afghan's need some tough love. Knock off the tribal BS, infighting, and step up or pretty soon
everyone is going home except the Taliban.
The West simply does not have the will power or fortitude necessary to conduct a long term conflict over
a miserable dust bin.
For 2,000 years or more no one has been able to conquer or control this truly nasty place and my money
is on another 2,000 years.

When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut what remains,
Jes roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.

Thank you, Michael:

Your insight is enlightening. I hope that policy makers and leadership are aware of your work. I talked with Robert Leeson personally yesterday after reading one of Bouhammer's blogs in which he suggested watching his documentary "At War". He is trying to get a distribution deal for the movie, and I hope it's soon. People like you and Robert are so important right now, and of course, I support and will continue to support your missions. - S Kohler

A Fix?

Our primary goals are to prevent Al Qaeda from reconstituting in Afghanistan and preventing the establishment of terrorist training camps there. We should be acquiring and training intel cells among the population. Maybe the classic 3 man cells to prevent rollup. Once we depart, these cells can keep us informed. Meanwhile the taliban/tribes will revert to what they have been doing for centuries...fight amongst each other for territory and power.... and the natural order of things is restored. - Scott Dudley

This article points out the desperateness of of the situation in Afghanistan. The Japanese prediction of a 30 year plus presence rules out any "quick fix" solution and imperils the U.S. strategy and support. Political pressure will force the abandonment of Afghanistan just as it has in Vietnam and Iraq. No palatable solution is available. - Jack Washington

Free is Not Free

Great dispatch Michael, great photos, as usual.

Heh. The "trick or treat" aspect reminded me of bears. Heck, depending on how it's done, I repeat, depending on how it's done, some bears are better about getting handed food.

My take on "free" health care is no, Americans don't want it to be free. I think most people want health care they can afford and can actually have access to.

Right now, the semi-pure capitalist approach has kept many people away from medical insurance that actually pays for medical care.

The Insurance Industry *could* have accrued goodwill for themselves had they been less greedy (unfettered greed, or hunger for more, is not a virtue in any system of self-interest, socialism included), and more potential customers would be firmly in their corner, helping to keep medical care a capitalist venture. But they didn't. So now, people like me see Insurance as the enemy.

Why?

Because Insurance treats me, and millions like me, like our money isn't green enough.

I am barred from purchasing medical insurance because of a pre-existing condition, and by the prohibitive cost. I have also recently heard the claim that because long ago The Eveel Government tied access to medical insurance only through employers. Well, ok, so when Insurance noticed matters worsening, long before anyone outside of the industry would or could, why didn't they innovate? Lobby for changes that even secondarily would benefit their customer and potential customers?

So while it is easy to brush aside people like me as an unimportant minority, that, too, comes with a price.

It drives me into the arms of the socialists. I am still waiting for capitalists to notice.

So far, Congressman John Shadegg is the only elected capitalist who seems to be trying to come up with a reasonable blend of pure greed-focused capitalism medical care (which never factors in humanitarianism in the budget), and pure power-focused socialism medical care (which is the Borg).

Until Afghanistan stops treating half its population as unimportant to their future, of course I mean women, then it chooses to stay a sticks and stones place.

Please, pass along our heart-felt gratitude to the Japanese, Lithuanians and the others who are trying to help.

Too bad some of those villagers (men AND women) can't get a field trip into modern civilization. Just for a few days. Just sayin'...

You are in my prayers, as always. Our Troops, Our Allied Soldiers, are always on my mind and in my heart. Please, make sure they know.

Watch your 6. - alexakim

...you would be above the fold on a lot of newspapers and would also win a Pulitzer for some of those photos. Michael, you are a true professional journalist, in a career field that is fast becoming a joke. But I have no doubt you will succeed personally, and enlighten as well -- you're that good. Just made a recurring donation and would urge others to do so too. We can bitch and moan all we want about the Mainstream Media but here is where the rubber hits the road. Walk the talk and support this guy!

May the road rise up to meet you, sir...

One of your best dispatches ever, Michael. A coherent and comprehensive coverage of local issues: education, medical care, NGO programs and attitudes. Plus an astute and understandable analysis of the overall picture of Afganistan hinterlands issues. Plus good insight into other countries' involvement (which we seldom see elsewhere). And enlivened by your always excellent photography. Kudos.

I'll be sure to forward this to my friends (with recommendations to contribute, of course). - Richard Gascoigne
