It was interesting to read your article and see your photos. I would venture a guess that 95% of the American general public does not have a clue about the stituation in the PI. The mainstream media doesn't care about covering it. They were fighting in the 60s when I was there a couple of times and still are. Your pictures of American Service personnel puts a face to the situation and the fact the united States is STILL in the PI. Keep up the great reporting. - Mike

Good job Michael. I hope you visit again Philippines in the near future and hopefully there is no more fighting at that time. More power. - Kenneth

Good stuff. I wish more people in this country could see your reports. I was in Manila half a century ago when the Huks were runing loose. Certainly better now but hard to put an end to it, as you point out, when every insult, real or imagined, must be avenged. Keep your chin strap buckled. - Jim Owens

Michael, as always, many thanks for what you do and you have an open invitation to appear on my show any time. We here at home with loved ones in Helmand are desperate for news and have to seek foreign reports for anything of substance but even most of those are rather generic so your dispatches are eagerly awaited.

Be well and stay safe--
Best,

Michael;

I was married n Iligan some 16 tears ago. Have family there and in Cagayan de Oro. Damn fine people in that area. Met many Muslims through my father in law. One evening in a bull session in the Sala (to which I was graciously invited) one of the Muslim guests said something that I will never forget. It went something like this; "We must forget how different we are and concentrate on how much alike we are. We (meaning both Christians and Muslims) want the same basic things; food, shelter, clothing and a better future for our children. All the rest doesn't count." I have never heard wiser words.

Michael ... Great photo journalism ... once again you're sending us the ground level stories that really provide the knowledge that Americans should have. Keep spreading the goodwill ... Helping the troops ... You are one of a kind. - Robert Rankin

Welcome From Cagayan de Oro

Thanks for the fresh insights, especially coming from a first-time visitor. If you had driven about a 100 kms. going southeast you would have been transported to a quite different enviornment where armed conflict whether brought on by religion or politics would be quite foreign. Here in Cagayan de Oro things are a lot different. Next time do visit us, say, for R&R. - Amadeo
