Apparently no one will engage on my idea to reconstruct the tv station batteries. That's too bad. It may only take a kilo of special dust. If interested, read http://www.webspawner.com/users/edta/

Can you say ethylenediaminetetraaceticacid?

Of course the hard part is making sure the system maintenance people can keep it from happening again. Batteries are a chemical machine and always the weak link in a hybrid energy system.

Does anyone make spirits locally? The still would be the best place to get pure water and the brewer would be the easiest person to train on battery maintenance (First lesson--moderation is a virtue).

Happy reconstructing and God bless the noble Lithuanians. - Monologer

"I asked if there was anything specific that he wanted to get out to a broader audience. Kendewalli’s answer was as succinct as it was unambiguous: 'I need fuel.'”

My response from the "broader audience" --So let's "reconstruct" Mr. Kendewalli's broadcast batteries. That will solve his fuel problem and allow him to meet tailored requirements. My optimism is based on certain assumptions tempered by experience in similar operating conditions. If you engage me, I will send a short list of questions to reconcile my assumptions. We'll go from there looking for the devil in the details. - Cary

Solar

I agree with Jim on the solar aspect. He said that he needed $600 worth of batteries. If they were a Li-On battery and some panels to recharge the batteries, he would be set for awhile. Then getting a solar inverter (am I correct on that?) to get rid of the generator. It would take money, but he would eventually break even. Just a thought.

Michael, I love your dispatches, keep it up man. - Adam Callender

This place sounds perfect for a solar installation. Maybe one of the big manufacturers could donate some panels. I wonder how the fuel is transported and its consequent cost. Thanks for the report, Mike - jim

I know Col Suiparus. He's in charge... it will be a successful mission. Good article, I love the enthusiasm of the Lithuanians.

Why would anyone live there?

So why does this place have a population?

Why doesn't everybody leave?

Why not just give everyone a one-way ticket out of there, instead of trying to pour money into the place? Seems to me even a rudimentary military operation would be far more expensive than giving the citizens lives (and jobs) elsewhere.

Watch those shoes;-)

It's interesting that you keep reminding everyone of the tennis shoe Taliban phenomenon. They must have decided that t-shoes are the best footwear for their purposes. One would think they would adopt something more durable for the rugged environment of Afghanistan. Anyway at least you have an indicator of some sort of who is who is that hostile corner of ME. Other places seem to be a mask of uncertainty!

As aside there seems so much to do in Afghanistan in order to bring this country out of the stone age. For too long these people have been pawns of powerful nations and local warlords who only wish to plunder the land and basically do nothing to enrich the lives of the people who are born, live, and die there! If there is ever to be a free and strong Afghanistan it will take many years and huge resources to educate and deliver these people from the slavery of ignorance and resulting poverty of body and mind!

Keep up the good work Michael the world needs more folks like you. Telling the truth of the world and putting a mirror up to our own apathy and ignorance! - Tommy Barrios
