From the White House: New INFOSEC Guidelines

05 May 2011

President Obama campaigned on a platform of Government transparency.  To his credit, he has taken steps in that direction, such as lifting the ban on photographing flagged draped coffins returning from the wars.  Again, to his credit, he made it clear that Americans should not be shielded from the horrors of war.  Paradoxically, yesterday, he banned the release of photos of the body of Osama bin Laden.

The White House has today issued these new INFOSEC guidelines, effective Monday, 09 May 2011.

The decision not to show the photos of a dead Bin Laden is not Mr. Obama's to make. It was "we the people" who were attacked on 9/11. It is our sons and fathers and husbands fighting and sometimes dying to protect us from the evils of this devil Bin Laden. We have seen our brethren jump from windows to their deaths. We have seen our men hanging from bridges, drug through streets with no honor, beheaded and blown up....With our eyes we have seen these things and suffered these losses. Have we the people no say, are we being so disrespected by this man who calls himself our president, that we cannot determine for ourselves if we want to see this enemy of our souls laying dead? Mr. Obama delivers us nothing but pain. He is a coward of a man and in fact...he must hate us much to do this thing to us.

At some unknown point a group of spymasters more or less came up to Obama while he was on the 9th tee, dropped a manila envelope in his golf cart and more or less said:

"We have him and not only that but we've already planned the raid, trained the team, given them their flying orders and right now ten thousand tons of deadly American kick ass is silently winging towards Bin Laden's little love nest in brand new stealth shit under the call-sign 'Cockpunch'.

Daily am amazed to realize, from BHO's actions/words, the depth of contempt for the intelligence of the average citizen held by him and his slick czars/admin. Contrary to BHO's obvious beliefs, WE DO UNDERSTAND. Perhaps 2012 will prove the vote does count (minus dead people and ACORN) and and rid us of this President....then it's to work we go to right the wrongs he has wrought upon us. GO USA and THANK YOU SEALS! Michael Yon as well!!!!

So you have two options... sign this document approving our actions, come in the TV room with us and watch the home team put the enemy quarterback in the morgue, then you get to do what you do best... go on TV and make some silly speech using the word 'I' a lot and take all the political credit... or you can tell us to leave you alone and get out of your office, that you won't be a party to assassination and we will pretty much just go do it anyway, leak it to the press and take all the credit ourselves... and maybe even mention Bush a few times. After all, we did all the leg work on this one... we've been running this guy down for ten years. You've been here, what, two of that? We rubber hosed the right guys, got the right intel, trained the right men and have wormsign the likes of which god has never seen bearing down on that fucker. So put down your little toy, grab your big boy pen and hop on board for the big win."

So regrettable that reports emanating from The White House are replete with contradictions. This, of itself, is like to play into the hands of enemies, and will do little, if anything,to encourage Pakistan to assist in apprehending senior associates of Osama residing in tha tcountry. It's really remarkable how the Seals, superbly trained as they are, could have managed to overcome the loss of a Black Hawk, carry out their assigned task and bring back a variety of items which, on the face of it, may prove to be of huge value when analyzed. I speak as a Brit who has a genuine admiration for the American people and who pokes friendly fun at their gung-ho ways even as he salutes their honesty of purpose and their optimistic 'can-do' approach to things. They took Omaha Beach in the face of truly horrible conditions; and they have done so many good, worthy things since those days.

There are a wealth of ironies:
Didn't BHO support those who insisted on getting photos of returning American war dead, at least in part to build opposition to the war?
Is BHO our president or does he represent the Muslims? Why does he rank their sensibilities first, then consider ours later?
How about all the media who published stories (later revealed to be false) of Koran flushing?
How about all the photos of Abu Graib? Did BHO fight to suppress them?
    A wealth of ironies.

Why would such flimsy evidence as a photograph change anything? Photographs will always be suspect to whatever cause the suspicion benefits (See also: Birther Movement)

It's disingenuous to promote that Obama will not show the image just because it's graphic because you're smarter than that. Do you really want to give reason for inciting further violence? What other benefit is gained from making the image public, that wasn't clear to me from your article.

I believe it should be optional and up to the individual to view the pictures or not view the pictures. We are a democratic government? I know for some it would help with the closure of the horrific loss of a love one due to OBL they have had to live with.
I mourn for many of loss friends and family members due to OBL, I would like to see the pictures simply for a reminder that we are not done at seeking out evil.

Wesley, As the granddaughter, daughter, cousin and now godmother of servicemen, I say to you that it's offensive to them, and me for you or anyone else to put the onus on our service members, as though they have ANY obligation to protect an enemy of our country from being 'angry'. By your statement, you are alleging that Osama bin Laden and his followers have victim status. They aren't, they were the ones who attacked our country and killed roughly 3,000 civilians, to intimidate and terrorize our nation. Secondly, radical Islamists get 'angry' over anything they wish.. in fact, they tend to become intimidated and less willing to impose their acts of terrorism, when we present a tough front, when they see for themselves what their actions bring to them. Face it, bin Laden's followers will take um-bridge irregardless. continued below

Our citizenry, our service men and women have a right to be proud of their achievements, especially given the fact that since taking office, Barack Obama has tied their hands behind their backs. What's more, after taking credit for their courageous actions, despite the fact that Obama ordered them to kill bin Laden, not take him alive, Obama told the foreign press that he didn't order them to shoot to kill. He's attempted to allege all manner of things, against the Seal team who he sent into harm's way. We all have a right to see the photos, and bin Laden's followers and any others thinking about signing up as one, need to see what will happen when they attack the US, because they are the ones in the wrong, and nothing you can say will change that fact. What's more, you need to focus your concern on others these Islamists terrorize and harm, their women, and non-believers in their midst..

@A&N and others -- The real issue is WHY we aren't being shown any of this. Are we really that concerned over whether these mass murderers are HAPPY with US? That is a sad part of political correctness... our freedoms are limited for FEAR of their incivility and potential terrorism. In my mind, this allows them to WIN against us before they have even acted!! OUR FREEDOMS NEED TO CONTINUE and not cower to these unreasonable, death-promoting, misled jihadist!! America is the land of the brave... not the PC whimps!!! I only wish our President was more on our side on these things than for our enemies and trying to appease a group that doesn't even think rationally!!

Spot on. Americans paid for UBL's head. We're entitled to see it. And the rest of the world will relax when it sees that monster really is dead at last. There's a fake circulating now. It will fool some, especially if they want to believe. Has it incited and recruited yet? Censoring the truth is not transparency. Denying us our due is cruel hypocrisy.

The reality of transparency is that you cannot tell the enemy you are coming. If all is transparent then you are unarmed. Would you tell the Pakistani's that the UAV 170 was flying over their territory to find Bin Laden by publishing it in the NY Times? How did it feel when Al Qaeda in Iraq videotaped the beheading of our people? Why didn't we show the crushed remains of the people on 9/11?
You say that Obama acted paradoxically in not showing the Bin Laden photo but then to be brutally honest, and I don't wish this, each one of our servicemen's coffins should be opened for the world to see what's left of them. Then your transparency would be guaranteed.

Considering the negative impact Osama Bin Laden has had on our country, I have no problem allowing the pictures to be viewed. No one would be made to see them. That should be optional.

I think we have become soft as a nation and too worried about political correctness. Foes have taken advantage of this. My opinion is it is a disgrace to worry about Bin Laden supporters becoming angry and wanting to retaliate. These animals are not civil and we shouldn't treat them as if logic is part of the equation.

Personally, I would have liked to see Bin Laden thrown into the street (alive or dead) and out troops allowed to walk over the top of him. I'd like to make it very clear how we felt about him. That is just my opinion.

than that. Was Abu Ghraib photo releases disingenuous? Did that do anything for us or change anything? What about releasing photos of our soldiers' coffins? Who's sensibilities are we considering there? Clearly that has no propaganda value....

Quit thinking myopically vanessa. There are families of thousands of dead Americans that want that proof. As your fellow Americans (clearly making an assumption), don't THEY have the right to put their dead at ease?

The "flimsy evidence" of a dead Osama bin Laden would change the look of the wall upon which I have hung pictures of those who jumped from the twin towers rather than burn to death, and the one of Americans hanging burned and headless from a bridge in Fallujah. It would spruce up that wall, actually. And when did radical Muslims actually need a REASON for violence? If we DON'T show the picture, do you think they'll say "Oh, no picture, so let's give them a pass on this one, boys, no retaliation for OBL's death, OK?"

Obama promised transparency, he needs to deliver. Judicious transparency is wise. Expedient censorship is hypocrisy. Censoring the truth is shielding me from the horrors of war, something he thinks is wrong and thus forced allowance of the press at Dover. Enemy vids I can avoid. You think the enemy is going to follow our example now? Really? My photos I am entitled to. Hiding the truth to allegedly avoid inciting more violence is leading by fear. It dilutes the victory and kow-tows to the enemy.

Jim Geraghty from NRO, said it best in his "Morning Jolt e-Newsletter:"

What's that? It might be "an incitement to additional violence"? Show me one extremist Muslim who's not going to go into a violent rage over killing bin Laden, but who will do so if he sees the photos. Go out and find him. A few weeks ago, a bunch of Afghanis went on a rampage and killed a bunch of aid workers because Pastor Pyro down in Florida decided to flame-broil a Koran. A controversial book, a cartoon, the latest conspiracy theory -- it doesn't matter. These guys are just looking for excuses to run around and kill people in a frenzy.

I am tired of my government's adjusting its policies in these inane attempts to placate the triggers of rage among unstable people -- as if it's our fault for provoking them.

The truth will set you free, even when it's ugly or gruesome.

The terrorists are already quite inflamed and are trying their best to cause murder and mayhem. Newspapers in the Middle East already have shown the photos of the men killed in the "mansion" and along with the apparently fake picture of dead OBL. If you understand the ME psyche, publishing the authentic photo would actually help demoralize terrorists.

Did we care this much about offending the easily outraged radicalized Muslim al Qaeda and their sympathizers when we decided to defend ourselves in the war they started, in pursuit of UBL? See how flimsy that argument gets with a little analysis.

Americans paid dearly for UBL's head. We are ENTITLED to see the evidence. Trust but verify. Question authority. It's not just for the left.

because I believe their release would bring about an incremental increase in the risk to the the safety of our servicemen as they do their duty in whatever "hotspot" they happen to be serving. Aside from all of the from all of the theories and POVs and BHO bashing, whatever... I think the lack of imagery will hasten the dissipation of OBL death in the mind of the terrorist and thus not serve to increase the risk to our servicemen overseas.

So many good points made already, but so frustrated with people (with good intentions I'm sure) thinking we can actually win the enemy over with kindness and sensitivity. Just as annoyed that he was buried at sea in 24 hrs. That just plays in to the whacko conspiracy theorists hands. (although I do agree the briny blue sea is a good spot for him) Why also did we worry so much about a proper muslim burial and ceremony, did not so many of the muslim world tell us he did not represent them and that he was distorting their religion? Seriously, the extremists will be extreme, we don't need to do anything for that to happen, it just will.

Obama probably thinks that he can apiese the Pak, and others by not showing the photos, but I ask the question, how was it that they did show any photos they could of our people. If he is so tender hearted, then he is not the man for the job. This is WAR, and often one does not like what he/she sees, but we go on.
Yes there is no purpose in staying in those countries when this is the life style of those people. Fighting first was said to protect the few that choose not to like there leaders, then it was about the oil fields. NONE of this was truth. I also agree that we can find and destroy anyone anywhere and do not need to allow our military to come home deceased or wounded. Sorry to say, another poor excuse for a leader, from Chicago, which is in the state I live. Bin would fit right in with the boys from chicago.

I guess you didn't read Mr Yon's 5-3-11 dispatch. "SR. DEFENSE OFFICIAL: Let me just add -- the president's role in this should not be underestimated. I think there was a body of intelligence that was brought forward to him and his team, as was described, but in the final weeks and really months of this, his personal interest and direction and attention pushed the case to a new level that enabled real action. And I think that role is quite important."

You must be thinking of the last president, who couldn’t be bothered to read the memos (warning of the impending attacks with airplanes) that were already on his desk for weeks.

Is showing this picture going to prove anything? No, pictures are even easier to fake than press releases. Going after Bin Laden was about justice. Reveling in a picture of his mutilated body is about vengeance. I hope our government's official position never becomes about vengeance instead of justice.

Obama told the SEALs, go after Bin Laden and if you meet any resistance, kill him.
They met resistance (firefight), they killed him.
Obama was satisfied they had done what he asked, and said so.
Now the press/bloggers are questioning the actions of the SEALs... they're the ones criticizing the actions of the Seal team, not Obama. They’re the ones nit-picking the meaning of resistance, not Obama. And it’s fools that are siding with those monday-morning-quarterbacks online, instead of backing the actions of the SEAL team and Obama.

I know just about everyone wants Bin Ladens pics released. I do too! But not at the expense of one of our soldiers. I think they should stay SECRET until all the US Military personnel are out of the sandbox. Forget about the News media, newspapers, and US citizens. We have soldiers who well be dealing with these nut jobs. The mission should have stayed CLASSIFIED and not leaked to the News media. The stories are out and their are many versions. The Obama Administration did a great job on the Kill mission but screwed up the post mission. The training camps would be using his pictures as a propaganda tool. Pictures can be Photoshopped too easily. But I always believed that Osama had been killed years ago so there would be no way to release pictures of a person who was not Osama. Obama opposed anything that would have brought about the killing of Osama if Osama was alive. No, I don't think so, the timing is too convenient for Obama...he needed something to take the spotlight off of his other trials. This could have been an elaborate scheme. Sorry I don't believe what comes out of Obama's mouth.
