Michael, I do not own a gun and know very little about them, but I have concerns. I have been hearing people say they know of people making their own guns and ammo. This concerns me because of the potential for misfiring and the damage it can do. Any thoughts on this.

I don't want our rights to own guns taken away and want to learn how to use them and maybe have one of my own some day. I am adamant about them taking away our rights to own guns and have contacted my state representatives to that effect.

People have been loading their own ammunition for decades. The materials for doing so are (or used to be) readily available. Dozens of books on the topic are available.

      Hi Trish Barton.

Send me an email to jonlandwer@frontsight.com and I will provide you a free two or four day handgun training class at my company in Southern Nevada. We are the countries largest firearms training school. www.frontsight.com I like that you don't know about them, and want to learn vs. jumping on the band wagon of lets get rid of them and penalize others because you don't own one.

Ammo comes in on Thursday at our local Sportsman Warehouse. People start lining up at noon and the ammo comes out at about 3pm. You line up at the service desk, what's left (nothing) goes on the shelves.

No 9mm, no 22LR, no .223 since January. Not sure this can be blamed on opportunism and profiteering. SOMETHING has consumed all available ammunition, disrupting the supply chain immensely.

Really Robin? Have you ever read the constitution? Did you know that the NRA was formed to protect the rights of newly freed slaves and the republicans that were being killed by the klan (think Robert Byrd)? How about the truly horrendous numbers of deaths associated with Tyranical governments? Hint - they all disarm the population as a first step. Pull your head out of you rear end.

IF you weren't so brainwashed by the moron media and the government goons presently ruining our great nation, you'd know that your statement is a fallacious lie and you would have never typed such tripe!

Thousands of children are murdered every year in the womb, thousands more killed by incompetent doctors and their attendant corrupt drug and medical collective

4MM disarmed Cambodians killed by their government
Untold MMs of disarmed Vietnamese killed by their government
Untold MMS of disarmed N. Koreans killed by their government

The 2nd Amendment is NOT about hunting or home protection! It is a check on the rise of a tyrannical government in this nation. NEVER FORGET THAT!

Libs and progs will dumb down the public's understanding about the 2nd amendment to self defense and hunting which they say should be subject to constraints and limitations. Don't let them succeed in diverting the argument to that or the 2nd Amendment will be dead.

I had this very argument with my deluded sister last night talking about "reasonable gun control", parroting the Marxist media about, "who needs this kinda magazine" and "who needs that kinda weapon" etc. and then painting those gun owners as "nuts" in the process of further postulating her ignorance

I immediately went and got out my Bushmaster and the two fully loaded 30RD mags that stay with same and informed her that her own brother was one of those "nuts' and that NO NUTBAGS from her side of the argument where ever going to take my 2nd Amendment rights away from me :-*

I then asked her what she thougt was going to happen if all of sudden the Communist collective gimme programs are shut down for whatever reason, what did she think was going to happen when all those Affirative Action Assholes don't have their Obama cards and phones anymore?

Those 30RD mags and the 1000 plus rds of .223 I have in stripper clips is going to come in mighty handy I told her 8)

She called me paranoid and fearful, I responded, "Well I guess that is why the Boy Scout motto is, "Always Be Prepared", because they are living fear and paranoia, eh?

        Argument won and ended 8)

I see your examples all highlight oppressive dictatorship type governments. So are you saying that if guns were banned in the US, the US govenrment would start a genocidal campaign against the population? what's your fear about not being allowed guns?

I'm not from the US so watch this topic with interest. I'm from the UK where there is strict gun control, even our police are largely unarmed. I don't fear being un-armed, I fear the population being armed!

I've spent just under 7 years in England, so I can say that I am familiar with English laws. I can't help but notice that despite the almost universal ban on guns, people are still killed by guns, especially in major metropolitan areas like London, Liverpool, and Birmingham. according to politics.co.uk in 2011 England had 11,227 gun offenses. That is an awful lot of gun crimes for a country where guns are illegal.

Hi David, ofcourse people will always be killed by guns in the UK. I did a quick search online to find US gun crimes but couldn't find much, I did find that in 2011 over 12,000 people were killed in the US by guns and around 500 in the UK were killed by guns. That's a multiple of 24...the US is not 24 times the size of the UK so from this we can gather that as a percentage, there are more gun murders in the US per head of population than the UK. I found this interesting link on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate I don't fancy living in Jamaica much!

I'm particularly concerned about accidental or colateral death caused by guns. If guns should remain to be legal, perhaps mandatory physciatic and weapons handling tests should be performed on a regular basis?

Hope you're enjoying the UK weather right now David :-)

@robin - Are you sure you have your facts straight? Do you have any idea what the number of deaths at the hands of "licensed" drivers are? Do you know how many people are murdered each year with a hammer? I'll give you a hint, both of them are higher than gun murders.

"An average of 195,000 people in the USA died due to potentially preventable, in-hospital medical errors in each of the years 2000, 2001 and 2002, according to a new study of 37 million patient records that was released today by HealthGrades, the healthcare quality company." http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/11856.php

Yet I do not see the outcry to shut down hospitals or limit doctor and nurse access to the meds and treatments that kill more people each year than guns.

For my money I would prefer Congress to get all up in the face of the medical community and spend money fixing THAT PROBLEM which is FAR MORE LIKELY TO KILL THAN A GUN.

This must be a farce, right?
First, what "death numbers" would not be horrendous, Robin? Are there tranquilizing, innocuous death numbers?
Second, "surely this is good news"!?! I, to you, would be a "gun nut", that is, someone who doesn't want to run as fast as I can to deliver all available weapons to my nearest government collection point. I know that worldwide governments are the greatest perpetrator of gun violence; and often in the most gruesome cases preceeded by disarming their populations. Recently there have been reports to whatever validity of our government purchasing vast quantities of ammunition...for training, they say. Is this the first time our government has trained? I have never experienced a time when supplies of ammo were reported to be so limited and over such a period of time. Are the purchases normal and only paranoia causing the shortages? Either way I highly doubt that the manufacturers are sitting on their thumbs and I have heard of no report that something has caused production to decline significantly.
So we have ammunition being bought and, apparently, stockpiled as fast as possible. Shortages then causing questions and, in turn, increasing tensions between government and citizens. I don't know who you refer to as complaining, but what of any of this presents to you good news!?! Any fascist should be able to see that...or did you just want to take this opportunity to stick your finger in the eye of anyone who wouldn't follow you in pompously spitting on those you deem a "gun nut"? Way to foster community harmony there, tolerant Robin. Maybe you were referring to the finding of a sector of our economy doing better since the current Admin took office as good news...?

Robin - are you then complaining about the horrendous number of deaths caused by automobiles? About 50,000 people are killed in the USA each year so surely we should restrict those multi-ton missiles heading down the highways.

Shelves are about bare. 100 rounds of 12 and 20 gauge for skeet shooting are up $2 per 100, when you can find them. Haven't seen .380 for over 8 weeks. The 9mm I bought last week, because the shelf was stocked less than 10 minutes before my purchase, was up $4 per 100 from when I was buying before Christmas.

I am sorta in the industry too, (building a site www.gotomygunstore.com) and I see a day coming when, due to the information highway known as the World Wide Web, the American public is finally going come out their collective matrix-like media unreality and get REAL :-?

But it has to start in the most communist infiltrated states first like CA, NY (the whole northeast in fact), WA, OR, IL, and DC!

BTW you maybe surprised to learn that since the Obomination and his crony Marxist media stole the presidency, twice, that a huge amount of guns and ammo recently purchased is by NEW gun owners who are sweeping up the inventories of firearms and ammunition.

I know people who have never even thought about serious gun ownership calling me up and asking me where they can a get Bushmaster or anything like it

MS Gulf Coast. There are a few rays of sunshine peeking out. At a recent gunshow I saw Pallets of mostly Russian ammo at higher than usual prices. My local funstore just got 20-1000 round cases of 5.56mm that sold for just over $500/ case. I keep hearing about profiteers buying up the ammo at WalMart and then offering it on auction sites for a profit. If I find one of them, their ass is busted! If someone is profiteering this way they are the epitome of runaway Greed!...

9mm and .40 cal. is difficult to get and very expensive in the State of Washington. I went to Cabela's two weeks ago. They had shelves and shelves loaded with every other caliber. But the 9mm and .40 cal shelves were picked clean. This was at 2:00pm. I asked how long this had been happening. The clerk said, "We completely restocked these shelves this morning. We get deliveries times a week. There's a 5-box limit per customer on 9mm and .40 cal.

Funny thing... consider the rumor about DHS buying a billion rounds of small arms ammo. And what kind of handguns does DHS use? A lot of SIG Sauer, which is made in 9mm and .40 cal. Here's a production status report sent to me by a former Oregon District Attorney:

S&W: Running at Full capacity making 300+ guns/day-mainly M&P pistols. They are unable to produce any more guns to help with the shortages.

RUGER: Plans to increase from 75% to 100% in the next 90 days.

FNH: Moving from 50% production to 75% by Feb 1st and 100% by March 1.

    Remington: Maxed out.

    Armalite: Maxed out.

DPMS: Can’t get enough parts to produce any more product.

COLT: Production runs increasing weekly...bottle necked by lack of bolt carrier’s.

LWRC: Making only black guns, running at full capacity...can’t get enough gun quality steel to make barrels.

Springfield Armory: Only company who can meet demand but are running 30-45 days behind.

AMMO: Every caliber is now Allocated! We are looking at a nation wide shortage of all calibers over the next 9 months. All plants are producing as much ammo as possible w/over 1 BILLION rounds produced weekly. Most is military followed by L.E. and civilians are third in line.

MAGPUL: Behind 1 MILLION mags, do not expect any large quantities of Magpul anytime soon.

RELOADERS: ALL Remington, Winchester , CCI & Federal primers are going to ammo FIRST. There are no extra’s for reloading purposes... it could be 6-9 months before things get caught up. Sorry for the bleak news, but now we know what to expect in the coming months. Stay tuned, we’ll keep you posted...

I don't know why this isn't getting more attention:

    http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/08/19/Government-Long-on-Hollow-Point-Bullets-Short-on-Answers

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/ralphbenko/2013/03/11/1-6-billion-rounds-of-ammo-for-homeland-security-its-time-for-a-national-conversation/

Why would Homeland Security have any need for hollow point rounds when they're forbidden for use in international warfare? They claim the bullets are being used for training, but considering the high cost of hollow points, this is illogical even for our gov't.

Michael--please address this conundrum. This needs to be seen by more people to force the gov't to give us real answers.

The articles appear to be unfounded. Find the source purchases that add up to 1.6. They are not there. In previous decades, editors would have demanded that sources be listed, but editors have been let go in cost cutting moves.

So let's hunt for those purchases:

The 2013 fedbid for DHS is for 240K rounds, and it's a routine small business set aside (5% set asides are common so that not just big businesses benefit from Federal contracts):
      https://marketplace.fedbid.com/fbweb/fbobuyDetails.do?token===wBKxmaVGYR9Kcq5Ajq%2BRH6QAAAAAHeAAgAgTFCGg/FzzqQbJAAyVXBA0Or

The ATK ammo purchase by DHS in 2012
      http://atk.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=25280&item=124123
is nearly identical to the last $90M 5 year purchase that DHS did in 2007:
      http://atk.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=25280&item=57736

      i.e., it's effectively a renewal of a 5 year contract.

Conspiracy theory is much easier if you don't go to the source. President Blackenstein can't be blamed for a 2007 5 year contract being renewed in 2012, and for standard small business set asides.

There is one heck of a lot of profiteering going on. I don't call it greed, I call it free market supply and demand capitalism. Oil companies do it, and so do Christmas tree sellers in December. There isn't a single Ammo supplier out there that isn't loving the current artificial bubble. This bubble will end just like the 2007 real estate bubble, and every other bubble and tulip craze - when people refuse to buy at these prices because the value just isn't there.

Anybody see this for what it really is

The Obomination and his Communist crony administration are buying up some of the ammo, just enough, thereby creating a false shortage in order to run up prices and deter anyone from owing the most popular used and desired calibers, , 22LR, 22MAG, 38SPL, 357MAG, 357SIG, 9mm, 10mm, 40S&W, 45ACP, .223(5.56x45), 7.62X39(AK), .308WIN(7.62X57), etc.

Since the Obomination took office there has been practically no government oversight,i.e. all the loyal American Civil Servant bureaucrats charged with protecting the American public who could have blown the whistle on this tyrannical jackanapes have been replaced by Affirmative Action ass kissers of the Obomination

I saw this happen when Billary came into office and now it's the same all over again, instead of Arkansas goat ropers, we now have Chi-Town Thugs and University of CA / Columbia University Communists in those positions, along with the aforementioned Affirmative Action Ass Kissers:-?

America is headed towards turd world parity at the present rate, if something is not done SOON :-*

And that would be backed-up by . . . WHAT?
Where is the blizzard of laws that would restrict us? How many exactly have passed into law? NONE!
    How about executive orders? NONE!

This shortage is created by a bunch of IDIOTS who are even buying ammo for guns they don't own! The ammunition suppliers know this is false demand and are not going to increase capacity. When this buying spree is over ammunition sales will drop like a rock. Same goes for guns. Thanks to the mouth-breathers if someone would like to buy a gun they might not be able to!
Sooner or later all this stuff will show up at gun shows and maybe someone will be able to get a used centerfire handgun at a reasonable price.

Michael, bullets have been flying off the shelves for over 7 years now. Shortages are nothing new. Primarily I think it is all the people who think the government is out to get them. You know the group that used to think the world was going to end in 2000, and also the black helicopter crowd, I tend to think they should take off their aluminium foil hats and let the breeze cool down their heads. We also have the groups who think the world will end and are building and stocking their bunkers. Paranoia seems to rule the USA, since Wall Street crashed and the Tea Party took over for The John Birch Society. And all the talking heads who seem to have no problems trying to undermine our estimation of ourselves, for ratings and fat contracts.
But fear not, now people are buying 3D printers and making not only their own weapons but their bullets too. It seems we can't even have a civil discourse anymore. Its all obomination, and demoncrat and repubanazis. Whatever happened to agre to disagree? enough soapbox time. Check out the March issue of Wired.com they have ashort article on bullets how much we import and export. Like everything else they are sold where the money is.

Panic buying of ammunition (and firearms) in all calibers in full swing across the U.S. Hmm. If I owned stock in an ammo company I would have done my best to spread the myth about Homeland Security buying up all the ammo in the world, when actually they just posted a notice of intent to buy so they could get a fixed price. This is is a free market in full panic mode! HILARIOUS!!!

just in the stores apparently 8)

Everyone "prepared" gun owner I know here in Tejas has plenty of ammo for their weapons. I surely didn't run out and start buying ammo like it was the end of the world, because I already have plenty :-*

Those folks that are cleaning out the stores are the Johnny-come-lately and the entrepreneurs hoping for a turnaround profit!

The government is also buying up huge stock piles of ammo that I believe are for more nefarious reasons rather being "prepared" as I stated previously, even though those purchases are small compared to the over all nationwide inventory, it is just enough, like Middle-Eastern hostage oil, to cause a "shortage scenario" and thus a buying panic, just like any other commodity, supply and demand pricing will never go away as long there are free market systems in place 8)

A free market system which BTW the Obomination and his sycophants posting here seem to hate with a passion!!

Judging by the comments, no one has any real clue where the ammo is going and no one knows how many new firearm purchases have been made in the last six months. I think we are grossly underestimating the numbers of new gun owners. After all, people usually don't advertise they just got a new rifle or pistol. I do know that carry permits have at least doubled in King and Pierce Co. WA.

Professor John Lott now appearing on Book TV., flogging his latest:
"At the Brink: Will Obama Push Us Over the Edge?"
    http://www.amazon.com/dp/1621570517

The book-tv presentation is available at this link:
    http://booktv.org/Program/14384/At+the+Brink+Will+Obama+Push+Us+Over+the+Edge.aspx

His talk includes specific and withering critique on statistics being flogged by President Obama and Joe Biden as deliberate falsehoods. For those in NYC, "deliberate falsehoods" is the same as "Damned Lies."

Most on this list know that Lott had researched gun violence fully expecting to come down PC - in favor of more regulation. However the actual numbers turned him around and he became an advocate of "More Guns Less Violence." Real numbers and asking the right questions does that sometimes.

It may amuse to learn that Lott says he met Obama when both taught at the U of Chicago. He reports that way back then Obama was dismissive of Lott as "that gun guy." Lott reports that BHO, unlike most in academia, was not at all interested in debate on a topic where he already held an opinion. He reports that BHO actually turned his back and walked away when Lott invited BHO to a meal to discuss the topic. Lott's take was that BHO's mind was so made up and he didn't want to be confused by additional facts.

To my admittedly cynical mind, this implies a seriously incurious person, or someone with a completely thought-out agenda.

Checked internet reports with a buddy who's a federal cop. The reply was: that there are and have always been, long-term commits to multi-year supply contracts. Unlike your local Police where live-fire maintenance training is spotty at best, Federal cops train with live fire regularly. A thousand rounds a year per armed officer, per weapon is below average.

As has been mentioned here already, ammo shortages started the day after a super-liberal Democrat was elected to the Whitehouse along with Democrat Majorities in the House and Senate in 2008.

To the best of my research this was TOTALLY due to panic buying and hoarding. I was guilty of that myself, once I figured out the rhythms of the supply chain.

When the Republicans re-captured the House in 2010, two years of panic buying and hoarding eased off for about two years. This spun 180 degrees with the election of 2012 that returned a man with a 100% Liberal ranking to the Whitehouse and kept a Majority of Democrats in the Senate.
